LA PLAGNE
La Plagne has six satellite ski stations and four villages at lowers altitudes to choose from.
Stay with the ski stations all at an elevation of 2000 m plus or minus.
Plagne Bellcote can get crowded in early morning. Plagne Village has a row of condos , hotels next to the Teleski des Aollets that have superb ski-in ski-out . This is where to go. At night you can take the Telebus to Plagne Centre .
La Plagne is good for two weeks of skiing . We stayed for 10 days. There is now a cable car connection to Les Arcs, so two weeks is probably needed.
Although the resort claims a 2000m vertical drop the best skiing is from the ski stations at 2000 m to peaks at 2700 m.
This is a super resort for powder skiing if you have sunshine and the Avalanche Flags are not flying.
Although most of La Plagne is intermediate skiing there are some expert and unique places to ski.
Take the lift from Plagne Centre to the top of Le Biolley then take the short surface lift to your left along the mountain ridge. There are great descents on both side of the ridge. To the east there is one very steep bowl and to the west there is super powder skiing slopes where few people go.
Take the gondols to the top of Roche de Mio and get off . Ski along the north ridge and look for a safe place to descend . The area is usually roped off. Follow some of the locals or someone who has done this before. Do not do it on your own .This is a descent to remember. This is avalanche country so do not take chances.
Take the same gondola to the Bellcote glacier. Ski down to a small chair lift ( elev 2300 m) north of the gondola. Expert runs which are great in fresh powder.
From the base of the chair lift mentioned above you can ski north through a valley all the way to Les Bauches . This valley is usually roped off but everybody seems to ignore the ropes. Again this is avalanche country so do not take chances.
