No Frills, No AC

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 5, 2014

A note, this is being written from the hotel.

We needed a place close to the university and since it's July, wanted air conditioning. This is one of the 3 hotels in Augsburg that has it. Also, coming from the US, when we were told about a B&B, we were expecting a Bed & Breakfast. Wow, were we shocked to find it was a hotel, and I think because of a goofy cartoon train mural in each room, it's is named for a train line, but that's a guess. And, oh, breakfast is an extra 7.50 Euros.

Amenities - there really aren't any. The room is about as spartan of one as you can have. If you're looking for a chance to put your feet up, you'll need to sit on the bed with your back against the wall. The seating are two, green, cylindrical stools, that can be pushed under the small table built into the wall, no matter the number of people. Hair dryers, iron and board are available at the desk. If you forget your toothpaste or shaving cream, it's in a vending machine in the lobby, along with snack food. Also in vending machines are soft drinks, beer, an lots of hot beverage choices. The larger room gives you 2 more hangers, 2 more towels, and 2 more coat hooks.

Breakfast: hard boiled eggs, a few cold cuts and cheese, some cereal, a coffee machine, and things that are pre-packaged. It's all you can eat, so make use of it to get your 7.50 worth.

The rooms are small, even the "family rooms" which add a small alcove with a pair of built in bunk beds. The first night we were there, we had a room for 2. The AC just didn't work. The next morning, upon request, we moved to a family room and the AC worked, for one day, one night and part of the next morning. We went out for part of a Saturday afternoon, and when we came back, no AC. There was also no one at the desk, so we surmise that they must have turned off the general AC compressor for the building. Hopefully, when they return, they will turn it back on.

The internet is free, but basic. To acquire the key, they send you an SMS text with a code to enter into the web page on your browser. If you only want to use a browser or check email, it's fine. If you need to do anything beyond that, for instance, if you're a university professor and need to access ports beyond a browser to work, you're SOL.

On the other hand, the folks who work the desk are quite friendly, especially Mandy, who was able to direct me to a laundromat (two trams to get there) and knows the public transportation system well. The beds are good and the bathroom is pretty nice, although there's really no place to hang things. I actually like the shower. There's no key, as each door has a keypad and you've got a 6 digit code. If no one's home, it also works the front door.

If you are traveling alone, on business, there's lots of tech industries near here, you aren't staying long and don't intend to spend much time here, this will suit you well. This is not a place to bring the wife, let alone the kids, for an extended vacation. Seriously.

Payment is all up front. When you leave, you're gone.
