So far as I know, you can make reservations any time you want. If you are planning to go to Oktoberfest, you should reserve as soon as possible. It may be too late by now.

Visa and MasterCard are both widely used and most hotels will accept them for a reservation.

Travel Tips for Augsburg

Reichsstadt – Imperial City

by Kathrin_E

Augsburg owed its wealth and political influence to its status as Reichsstadt (Imperial City). The only governor the city had to accept was the emperor himself, which actually meant political independence. Augsburg was not subdued to any prince and also not to the bishop who resided in its walls. The magistrate was the government. The city owned and ruled a territory of its own in the surroundings.

The Holy Roman Empire Of German Nation was no centralized state like the kingdoms of England or France. It was more like a loose association of states who cooperated (or not) under one common head in matters that concerned the whole empire but otherwise acted like independent states.

The gable of the city hall bears the heraldic symbol of the double-headed black eagle, the imperial coat of arms, to show this status. The gallery of Roman and Christian emperors in the Golden Hall, the Augustus fountain in the main square – all these refer to the tradition of the Holy Roman Empire and Augsburg’s position in it.

Beautiful buildings

by MEdelmann

The Augsburg architect Elias Holl contributed a number of fine buildings to his hometown, before being forced to resign his offical position because of his protestant faith ...

Some of his great works are the splendid town hall (it was built between 1616 and 1620) and the Perlach tower.

And this are only some of the plenty interesting buildings which can been seen in the old city centre of Augsburg .....

Open Air Theater at Rotes Tor

by chinesefairy

Catch a musical/opera performance at the Freilichtbühne am Roten Tor (only open during summer months) -- but don't forget to take a blanket with you as it can get quite cold toward the end of the performance! Tickets are available at the ticket service at the main theater building (Kennedyplatz 1) or at the phone #/on the website provided below.

City hall

by chinesefairy

Probably most recognizable landmark of Augsburg. Go inside to see the "Goldener Saal" (Golden Hall) or climb up the Perlachturm next to it (given good weather conditions) to have a good overlook of the city!
