Grocery Stores with well stocked international isles- hispanic products

by ladina23

I live in Bamberg and have been here for about 6 weeks now. I have gone sight seeing and have experience quite a bit of the German culture. However, I am beginning to miss certain foods and condiments. For example Tapatio hot sauce, El Pato tomato sauces, and various other spices. I am no stranger to the road and if anyone knows where I can find these items please let me know.

Thank you

I can tell you this is the same in the other direction as well.

Here another forum for English speaking expatriates in Germany which is probably better suited than this travel forum.

Travel Tips for Bamberg

Visit the shrine to Rauchbier...

by richiecdisc

Visit the shrine to Rauchbier at the centuries old Schlenkerla brewpub. Stepping into Schlenkerla is like stepping back in time for anyone, it’s a rare place where time has stood still for centuries. For me, it was doubly so, as it stirred memories of former visits, as did strolling around Bamberg in general. My first visit to this jewel amongst German cities was in 1997 when I showed Ina, a German native, the joys of her own country. It even caught me by surprise as my primary reason for going was to try the world classic Rauchbier, but the jumble of building styles and the setting was amazing without being overwhelming. I went back again a few years later and enjoyed it even more with freshly fallen snow. What I noticed that I had not before were numerous Botero sculptures strewn throughout the city. They seemed incongruous at first but we enjoyed seeing them in what seemed unlikely places. One night while out playing in the snow, we happened upon an unusual one, a naked woman laying on her stomach. It was enormous and we climbed on it and played as children, laughing in the cold night air. I returned again this year with VTer tabatha and never seemed to come across one. I mentioned it to Hanna but having not seen them before, it made no real impression. Still, something seemed missing. I thought maybe I just wasn’t walking in the same areas but it is not that big of a city. When I returned home and scanned my photos a few months later, I dug out my old photos to compare and lo and behold I had nearly the same photo, one with the Botero, and the other without. It must have been a temporary exhibit that had since moved on. So, it seems no matter how many times you walk down the same paths, there is always something new to see and experience and previous memories are just that, a representation in your mind. It’s nice to hang onto things in your past but you cannot let them keep you from the present day or impede your future. Bamberg is a special place for me with lots of memories, and surely more to make someday.

What's in a window?

by iandsmith

As indicated in the "to do" tips I find architecture interesting. The artistic patterns around windows, sometimes man made, other times with nature creating tracks around the window is something to be appreciated if you are of an artistic bent as, rather obviously, I am.
These examples are from the old part of the town on the western bank and include a half timbered (Tudor style) example in pic 4 and an example of dormer windows (from the latin "dorme" meaning "to sleep") in pic 5.

A Master Stone Carver to the Dom

by lonestar_philomath

This man was nice enough to take me up the fourth spire being renovated. He told me an interesting fact. There are four spires on the Dom and it takes 30 years to complete renovations on one spire. The spire we ascended was the fourth and when completed will end the first 120 year cycle of renovations. Then the team will start work on the first spire to keep up appearances. The stone used for the Dom is sandstone. More pictures coming!

*The* place for beer

by german_eagle about Schlenkerla

The restaurant Schlenkerla is *the* place for having an original local dark beer called "Rauchbier". The restaurant exists since 1678, and since then this beer is brewed and offered there.

The ambience is cosy, rustic. It is located in a former Dominican convent. Rauchbier! (but they also offer great local food)

Old Town Hall

by Travelchili

The Old Town Hall in also known as the island or bridge town hall, since it was built on an artificial island in the river and is connected to the banks by two bridges each. This town hall was mentioned already in 1386, however the current edifice was constructed starting in 1460 after a city fire.
