University of Bamberg
by Travelchili
The tradition of higher education in Bamberg dates back to 1647, when the prince-bishop of Bamberg founded an academy with two faculties, philosophy and theology. In the 18th century the addition of law and medicine turned the academy into a classical university with 4 faculties. In 1979, the department of economics was created, and the institution was given the status of a university.
Bamberg has more than 7.000 students; it doesn't have a campus and the univeristy buildings can be found in different locations.
The University of Bamberg resides to a large extent in preserved buildings that are classified as historical monuments (and thus, protected by UNESCO) - look out for them!! Some of the buildings are very beautiful.

Rauch is the German word for smoked and Rauchbier is a style of beer that is produced using barley, dried over a beechwood fire. This imparts a unique smoky flavor. Beechwood fires were commonly used in Franconia until the middle of the 19th century.
For a Typical Pub Experience
by estargrl88 about Brauerei Fässla
This brewery, around since 1649, has an old, cosy atmosphere with lots of wood. I only had a cup of tea here, but was brought here by a local who intimated that it was a pretty establishment locality. Therefore, I recommend it for a taste of a traditional Bamberg experience.
Spezial Keller
by bonio about Spezial Keller
A short steep climb to reach the beer garden of the Spezial brewery is well worth the effort. You'll be rewarded by some excellent food, beer and views across the city. A good place to spend a sunny evening.
Excellent Beer Garden
by seoulgirl
This is a really nice beer garden. It is very very large. Hard to believe it isn't open year around since it's sooo huge. You can see some far off views of old architecture that are all lit up at night, so gorgeous. They look like ghosts. There is a large playground but we were on the opposite side so we didn't see it. We had the Schlenkerla smoked Rauchbier lager. It was a bit too smoky for us. Rogue ales had a smoked beer that was a bit over the top for us also. This beer was like that. It would be good in a marinade.
