Old Town Stroll
by german_eagle
I absolutely loved to stroll through the old town of Bamberg, the left bank of the Pegnitz river in particular. The town was not destroyed in WWII and was able to preserve its medieval charm. When I visited it was a VERY warm day (and night) so I especially enjoyed walking around the streets of the old town in the evening.
You'll find yourself dreaming about past times, and eventually entering one of the cosy restaurants. My fondest memory is most likely sitting outside a cafe by the river, enjoying a glass of local white wine.
A BIT ABOUT BAMBERG
by LoriPori
Located in the Bavaria district of Germany, on the River Regnitz BAMBERG is a World Heritage city, with one of Europe's largest intact old town centers. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Prince Bishops of Bamberg gave the Middle Age architecture its largely Baroque appearance.
Points of interest include the wonderful Altes Rathaus, the Bamberg Town Hall with the beautiful frescoes painted on it. Actually it was one of our VT members "Bamberg" page that really enticed me to make a stop here after visiting Rothenburg on der Tauber. I didn't know much about it before. It was a bit out of our way, but sooooo worth it.
church St. Gangolf
by german_eagle
St. Gangolf is the oldest church of Bamberg, it was built 1058 - 63. The nave is preserved in Romanesque style, the choir and the towers were rebuilt in Gothic style.
Inside you will find only a very few works of art. Most fell a victim to a renovation in 1850.
The church is located in the "Theuerstadt" quarter, on the right bank of the Main-Donau Canal, about 10 minutes walk from the city centre.
Schlenkerla
by bonio about Schlenkerla
Probably the most famous of the breweries in Bamberg. Producers of Rauchbier or smoke beer. Someone said it tastes like Bavarian smoked cheese, and they are not far fom the truth. As ever I develpoed a liking for it and managed to spend the evening there but Mrs Bonio was not so keen, other non - smoky drinks are available. Tasty food on offer too. This one is very busy, try to pick a good time to visit.
More than a portal

One thing I love about Europe is the architecture and I enjoy simple things like doorways and windows. Some of them have so much character and are often historical in nature as pics 1, 4 & 5 would indicate, while others, such as pics 2 & 3 are colourful and artistic.
