GOOD HOTEL

We had trouble getting accommodation in Bamberg because of some event on.
Luckily, this large 171 room, 3* Hotel had a room and an underground, secure car-park. [pay]
It is located right on the River front, so our breakfast had River View's!

The staff were good, helpful & friendly.

The Hotel had an elevator, this was good news, and we were able to have a "non smoking" room.
Our Room was a nice size and had everything we needed. It was clean, bright and airy. They have a luggage room, wake-up call's, Bike rental and a lot more.

Breakfast was included in the price, and was a Buffet with a huge choice, excellent!
It was very busy, but we were found a table, and had good service.
The Hotel is located in the quiet part of town, but still is only .50km to walk, which is what we did to see the sight's.
I wouldn't hesitate to come back here and stay.

Bamberg from east coast U.S.

Is the best way to get to Bamberg University from the U.S to fly to Munich and then take the train to Bamberg?

Re: Bamberg from east coast U.S.

by abalada

No big difference if you fly into Munich (MUC) or Frankfurt (FRA).

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: MUC
From: FRA
To: Bamberg

Check if you can get from your airline a Rail&Fly ticket. This will be the best deal for the train part.

If you do fly into Munich, you will be able to get a Laender ticket (Bayern) from Munich to Bamberg for approx 20 euro. The regular fare is substantially higher, but since both Munich and Bamberg are in Bavaria, you would do well to take advantage of the Laender. Buy it through the ticket machine at the station
and you will save a couple more euros.

Re: Bamberg from east coast U.S.

The length of journey is similar from either Frankfurt or Munich, so I think it really depends on what airfares you can get.

The Laender tickets are excellent, but do mean you can only travel on regional trains.

You can get excellent online advance deals from bahn.de for either journey. You will receive an eticket to print out (or they will send you the tickets for an additional fee). You present the eticket to the guard with the card you used to pay (absolutely essential to take the same card). A very efficient system.

The only disadvantage is that this ties you to one specific train, so allow plenty of time between landing and train departure to allow for potential delays.

You will pay more for your ticket if you use the ticket office. Use the ticket machines instead: they have English language options.

Use the bahn.de link given above to investigate train times and online discount fares from both airports (you'll have to make at least one change on any departure, I think).

Travel Tips for Bamberg

Bamberg Tip

by Venturingnow

By far my fondest memory of my trip to Bamberg would have to be getting stuck in a terrible rain storm. I had been in the Residenz taking a tour when I came outside into some really overcast skies. I knew I really had to catch a train, so I decided to start speed walking to the train station. About half-way there it began to pour, and I mean pour cats and dogs! By the time I had unlocked my backpack and found my umbrella I was entirely soaked through my clothes. I tried braving the rain with the umbrella, but it was coming down to hard. The bottoms of my pants were muddy, and I had to stop and put on my poncho. What an experience!

Little Venice

by Travelchili

Check out the so-called "Little Venice", the picturesque ensemble of little fishermen's houses with highroofs and numerous gables, decortive facades with balconies, arbours and tiny front gardens. You can see "Little Venice" from various places, but one good place to recommend is from the Markus Bridge

Memorial

by leics

Easy to miss this.

It is placed on the northern wall of the Altes Rathaus..you will need to cross the Untere Brucke.

The memorial is for the Jewish 'fellow citizens' and all who stood against the dictatorship of the National socialist Party.

Bootshaus

by bonio about Bootshaus

Arrived here by accident, out for a riverside walk and spotted a great looking beer garden, decided to call in for a beer, as you do! This is a place used by people boating on the river and walkers along the side, a marvellous setting. Anyway one beer became two while we watched the boats on the river and people swimming in it, the food looked very tempting and proved to be excellent.
This is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon.

Bamberg, Germany...The Old Town Hall

by GrayEagle

Bamberg is a fascinating city with a rich history both religious and secular. One of the interesting sites is the old Town Hall, which was located in the middle of the Regnitz river that runs through town. It was put in the middle due to disagreements between factions within the city. At night you can walk out onto the bridge that connects the two banks of the river with the building and place a coin in a special box. The placement of the coin causes flood lights to come on for a brief time and will allow you a wonderful view of the building and the two halves of the bridge. It also makes for a great photo.
