As you want to know the driving time I suppose you will have a car.

It should not take you much longer than 1.5 hours to drive from Zell am See to Berchtesgaden (by train it would take 3 hours). The fastest way is towards Salzburg and cross the border at Hallein.

From Berchtesgaden it takes about 15 minutes up a steep hill to the carpark at Obersalzberg. There you have to take a bus up the final slopes (no cars allowed on this final stretch of the road), this takes another 15 minutes.

The nicest thing to do near Berchtesgaden is to carry on to Königssee which is a nice lake surrounded by high mountains. You can go on a cruise there. If you are a bit adventurous you can do a guest ride on a four men bobsleigh down the ice canal.

There is also a National Park nearby, and there are hiking trails in the area. Gary

Travel Tips for Berchtesgaden

Tunnels & Bunkers

by alancollins

The Hotel Zum Turken was next to the Berghof, which was Hitler's home at Obersalzberg. The hotel was used as accommodation by the SS who guarded Hitler. Under the hotel was a series of tunnels and bunkers. The tunnels can be assessed at the rear of the hotel for a small fee. If you decide to visit the tunnels remember to bring coins as the entrance is controlled by a barrier which only takes coins. On a recent visit the hotel appeared closed though the tunnels were still open.

Berchtesgaden's Symbol

by sandysmith

The Watzmann massif has come to be known as the symbol of the Berchtesgaden area due to the following legend:
King Watzmann ruled over Berchtesgaden, he hated humans and animals and loved to torment his subjects and torture their animals. Mad hunting parties were his favorite sport and he loved the sound of the hunting horns and the baying of the hounds resounding throughout the forest. His wife and seven children also shared his lust for wild hunts where the sweating horses collapsed with exhaustion and the game was chased to death before being savagely shredded to bits by the hounds. This madness continued until God decided to punish them. With cries of ‘Off to the hunt!’ echoing from the castle courtyard and hunting horns resounding, the whole family set off with their baying hounds. In the pale light of dawn, the king noticed an old woman with her grandchild on her lap. He spurred his horse on toward them so as to trample them to death. When the farmer and his wife ran out of the hut to bring their dying loved ones inside, the king called the dogs on them till they were bitten to shreds. Smiling, the king, queen and children observed the bloody scene. Now here they stand, immortalised in rock: the king, his wife and seven children forced to stare down into Berchtesgadenerland.

Koenigliches Schloss Berchtesgaden

by globetrott

Koenigliches Schloss Berchtesgaden is the large palace next to one of the churches in the centre of the town and it was founded as an Augustinian monastery in 1100. In the 16th century it became one of the summer-residences of the royal Wittelsbacher family and nowadays it is a museum for fine furniture, porcelain, paintings and a lot more - see the picture that I made at the entrance of the museum.

TAKE A PLUNGE

by Duffelgirl

Walk off the beaten path and swim in this pool (Adults - 7.70 Euro’s for 2 hrs, 10,20 Euro’s for 4 hrs). It is soooooooo relaxing I could have stayed for days!!
There are several thermal pools (one with a small water slide) catering for the thermal water lovers. You can also have a sauna (I think it costs extra). There are plenty of wooden recliners dotted around to relax on, but the best bit (aside from the waterslide) has to be the outside thermal pool. It is quite small but has a rotation of three water jets (lots of bubbles).

Jennerbahn

by Skanska

Even if you don't plan to go skiing, please do yourself a favor and take a trip up the Jennerbahn. The view on the top is amazing and the trip itself with the cable car is enough to get the nerves rattled. Once on the top of the mountain you will have your reward, both with regards to the view and the option to get refreshments and something to eat in the restaurant.
Catch the bus at the Berchtesgaden train station. You'll have no problems finding it as it's clearly indicated.
The trip is fairly expensive at EUR 19,90 (December 2006) for a return ticket.
