Advice on where to stay in April

by d0rsia

Hi, Im planning on spending 10 days in Berchtesgaden next April. At the moment I was think of staying 2 nights in Berchtesgaden town itself to allow me to look around the town and surrounding area, aswell as walking to Obersalzburg one day.
I was then planning on going onto a campsite which is apparently 10mins from Lake Konigssee and spending the next week there hiking trails and spending time at the lake.

Does this sound like a sensible plan and are there any suggestions as to more activities or sights. (i.e. would you spend more time in the town maybe)

Thanks

April is quite early in the year for hiking in the Alps. E.g. places like the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) open only mid May.

If you stay in Berchtesgaden or near Königssee you will receive a guest card (Kurkarte) which will cover also the regional buses.

Thus it plays not that much a role where you'll stay exactly.

You might wish to check to see if they still have the bobsled track nearby Berchtesgaden. You used to be able to navigate the bottom portion. Salzburg, Austria is quite closeby, and is worth a day trip, or two. Gary

Berchtesgaden is a small town and you will see plenty in two days. You could just as easily stay the whole week in town, unless you really want to camp, as the Koenigsee is really no great distance from town.

And yes, the bob track is still there. Look at google maps satellite view - clear as day to the left of Schonau am Koenigssee...

There is also the Salt Mine that you can tour. A trip on the Jennerbahn would probably be quite pretty at that time of year as well. There is a national park nearby Berchtesgaden. You can visit their web site to see what activities they might offer for that time of year. Gary

Travel Tips for Berchtesgaden

Skiing and a Sore Butt!

by NC_Ziggy

Well, we were there to ski so ski we did! At least we tried... It was my first and only attempt and though I considered myself pretty athletic and did quite a bit of water skiing before, this was a beast of a different nature! But still it was most enjoyable and I would like to think that I improved some during the two days we had there...

Unfortunately, I had a pretty severe knee injury just 3 weeks before leaving Germany for my return to the U.S. (it didn't happen here!). Two years later it required major knee surgery and I have never attempted to ski again though there are slopes only one hour away from my home... So, this makes the memory even more special for me!

Native Costume

by grandmaR

In 1950, the local people dressed up in their best clothes on Sunday. The man wore lederhosen and the women wore dirndls. Lederhosen are very long wearing leather shorts.

My dad was particularly impressed with the shaving brush decorations in the hats.

Kornmesserhaus

by globetrott

Kornmesserhaus is the name of this building dating back to the year 1055 but it has got a new facade in the 19th century. It was built outside of the Fronfeste, next to the entrance-gate and is a good example how old the city of Berchtesgaden is. It used to be an important city to produce Salz, that was expensive like gold in the medeaval times.
On my other pictures you may see a few fine examples of the lovely architecture in the old town of Berchtesgaden.

Shopping

by adambeau

this sign confirmed,
...I wasn't in kansas anymore.

Walking throughout these tiny streets, along with the people going about their daily lives often gave a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

Hundreds of tiny shops, though very little English is spoken here. Finding your destination may take some rather curious experimentation with the locals.
