Winter hiking in Berchtesgaden

by Shanneong

Has anybody try a winter hiking in Berchtesgaden? I'll visit here in this winter, and wish to do an easy (approximately 2-3 hours)hike.

Thanks.

Shanne

A walk from Berchtesgaden to Konigsee and back should be fine. I haven't done it in winter but that should be OK. There are plenty of trails and the tourist office will confirm which ones are available in winter. If you are really adventurous get the Jenner cable car up and walk down. It will depend on ski runs but there are some tremendous views at the top. I do a lot of winter walking in Garmisch and the paths are cleared and marked. I'm sure it will be the same in Berchtesgaten. Ramsau and Weiskirche are other possible destinations in the vicinity. Look out foe the picture map boards which will show some of the routes.

Forgot to say that Konigsee is where boats take tourists to St Bartoloma in summer. As the lake is likely to be frozen I wonder how they get there on ice. I believe there's also a bobsleigh run there too. Konigsee as a village is not very big but the lake is definately worth a visit.

I don´t have any hiking experience in that area of Bavaria, but you could check B-gaden´s website for ideas: www.berchtesgaden.de/en/f94e56f2-d6d6-fa6a-f252-f27d21c63147.html

Travel Tips for Berchtesgaden

Royal Palace

by sandysmith

If you wish you can tour the Royal Palcace in Berchtesgarden - althought with such good weather I preferred the outdoor sights. It was originally built around 1100. Crown Prince Rupert of Bavaria lived here with his family from 1922 to 1933 . During the 50 min tour you can see his art collections as well as the roman monastery, the gothic hall and renaissance halls.

Pack a clean T Shirt or take the back pack off!!

by scottishvisitor

You never know what the weather will throw at you = so pack for all seasons and wear sensible shoes!! When we visited here the temperatures were in 30 + be prepared and pack a clean T-Shirt just in case of over perspiration. Back packs should be removed = they cause your skin to over heat and leave an imprint when removed!! Don't forget your camera = make sure it is fully charged or carry extra film = the views here are outstanding

Walking up to the Eagles Nest

by alancollins

As a rather unfit, overweight, lazy old fart I decided it would make a change to walk up to the Eagles Nest. I've done the bus bit several times. So I picked a July day when it was slightly overcast and set off for the top. The road for walkers travels a different route to the coaches and only one vehicle passed me on the way up as well as only one person. Shows it's a popular walk. It took me 2 1/4 hours to reach the top which was cloudy and cold. After lunch it took a another 1 3/4 hours to get back down. I was knackered afterwards but felt I had achieved something by doing it. I would suggest picking a cool day and take plenty to drink.

See the travelogue for the June 2010 walk.

A Beautiful Location and a Beautiful Smile

by kenbac about Wirtshaus im Zauberwald

This is a lovely Gasthaus on your journey through the Zauberwald to Hintrsee. It is a lovely place to stop for a coffee or beer. You will be welcomed by Rachel, who originally came from Dublin in Ireland. Rachel is a really nice girl who will welcome you with her lovely smile. Usually just have a coffee or a beer

Konigsee

by codrutz

Konigsee in Berchtesgaden region in Germany is one of the nicest lake I've seen. Its waters are so clear you can see the bottom even when the lake has over 10 meters depth. The fact that makes Konigsee unique is it location between the mountains, and I liked how the lake ends right into the 'walls', without a plane surface first. It's really amazing.
