Hitler's Window in 1950
by grandmaR
One of the prized features of Hitler's Eagles Nest house was a huge picture window which could be lowered into the floor for an uninterrupted view to the north. The window is gone, but in 1950, we could see the same view as when the picture window was lowered.
In silhouette is the American Army Colonel who drove us up to the site on the left, my mother, my sister, and on the right edge - me
Hintersee to Ramsau
by iandsmith
If you're looking for something to do, i.e., as in exercise, as in walking, you could do worse than catch a bus out to Hintersee and start walking back to Berchtesgaden, as we did. What this does is give you a bit of everything. There are places where you're following the stream, parts where you're in the forest and other sections where you'll find yourself cruising through a village.
All the time there is the sound of rushing water and a backdrop of snowcapped mountains. If you get lucky you'll get a still day and a mesmerising mirror shot of the peaks reflected in Hintersee. Me, I'm still waiting for the right day.
That won't stop you having a thoroughly enjoyable experience however. With the gravel crunching beneath your feet you'll round Hintersee and hit the trail/road/trail on your way back. Initially you'll find yourself in a national park following a path beside the stream but they've had to change the route somewhat since the violent storm in 2007 uprooted many of the waterside trees.
You'll then walk past a hotel before the track cuts across to the other side and then slowly loops back around to the stream again.
Rain-proof jacket
by Manara
The region is very green, because it rains a lot. Even on fine days the weather can change suddenly, so never forget to bring a rain-proof jacket with a hood or a cap. This is the advice I give most frequently to those who visit mountain regions.
Fronfeste - the old fortification
by globetrott
Fronfeste is the name of the old fortification of Berchtesgaden, that you may see opposite of the Koenigliches Schloss. There are 2 large gates at both sides and a lot of arcades with a great facade, showing some interesting frescos.
Under these arcades you will also see an Enzian-Brennerei , a destillery that is transferring the roots of the alpine flowers "Enzian" intoa brandy, that might make a great souvenir as well, BUT maybe you better taste it, before you take it home
Salzbergweg
by sandysmith
The Salzbergweg is very famous - the source of the town's prosperity since early 16th century. A visit to the salt mines is a unique fun as well as educational experience, don't miss it!
You need to allow two hours for the tour which includes clothes changing time.
Its much cooler down in the mines so bring some warm clothes and good shoes.
