Maria Gern

Whilst in Maria Gern visit the pretty baroque pilgrim church - another onion dome that is oft photographed! The countryside around here is particularly idyllic too.
You can walk here if feeling energetic (its uphill!) - we got the 9537 bus from Berchtesgaden and walked back downhill through the woods ;-)

Maria Gern

by Peterodl

I hiked to the Maria Gern church from Berchtesgaden within 1 1/2 hours (with getting slightly lost twice).
The experience walking through the woods to get to the church was worth the time getting lost.
The church is small but a visit to it is almost a requirement it is so beautiful.
A steep paved road/path next to the church leads up to the path for the Kniefelspitze (1189 meters high).

A small village just a few kilometres from Berchtesgaden in SE-Germany. There is nothing to see but this wonderful baroque church and a great panorama on the Alp mountains - but this more than enough. If you are going to Berchtesgaden, make a stop here - it is a beautiful spot.

Kneifelspitze Hiking

by Peterodl

I climbed up the Kneifelspitze which is 1189meters high one day after I hiked 4 miles to find the Maria Gern Kirche.
The climb was fairly easy and the views going up were well worth it. There are a few pastures to it in on the way and further on the path there are benches at regular intervals.
I climbed up in late March and there was still snow on the path which hindered my progress a little bit but not too bad.
There is a restaurant (Paulshuette) on the top with an outdoor patio where you can grab a well deserved beer and sit and enjoy the view.

Almbachklamm Gorge

by sandysmith

Another interesting gorge to visit and hike through is the Almbachklamm. To reach it take a local bus from Berchtesgaden on the Marktschellenberg route. In about 11 minutes you will reach the gorge stop where you walk to the gorge entrance via the Kugelmuhle (ball mill). Again only accessible in the summer months and a small entrance fee is payable. From the Kugelmuhle the path leads through the gorge to the Thereisen-Klause Dam in about 1 hour 30 mins. The path and steps (take care as slippery when wet) are protected by railings and wire cables. From the dam the path branches off via Ettenberg to reach Marktschellenberg in about 2hours 30 mins. Another path leads to Hintergern-Maria Gern.

Our option was to get a local bus from Berchtesgadedn to Hintergern - Maria Glen and walk the opposite way to the gorge (an easier route!) in about 2 hours and then bus back from the Kugelmuhle.

Berchtesgaden

by kenyneo

Hope someone can tell me what public transport I can use ( alternatives ) to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg ? ( It seems that its nearer to Salzburg than Munich , so I figure I will visit it when I am Salzburg rather than Munich )

Places that interest me would be the

1) Village and palace of Berchtesgaden itself of course
2) Maria Gren Church
3) Eagle Nest
4) Salt mine ? ( not really coz I will be going another
nearby salt mine :-)
5) and nearby Ramsau

I want how do I travel between these places, how much does it cost , alternatives, any entrance fee ?,

I have heard of a bus tickets called Urlabs . Any idea how this works. I tried to google it but cant find anything. Any website is appreciated.

I bought a "whole" guide book of Germany by Eyewitnesses and it doesnt have such detail , so is my Let's Go Europe Guide ...I hope VT can help me :-)

From Salzburg you can go to Berchtesgaden either by train (it takes about 1 hour) or by bus. Buses leave from the railway station too (Hauptbahnhof) and get to Berctesgaden in 45 minutes. From Berchtesgaden there are local buses to the other villages and attractions of that area.

I think you should find what you need on www.rvo-bus.de

Maria Gern and the Salt Mine are fairly short walks out of town. I would walk there. Ramsau is a little farther but a pleasant walk. You can also get a bus.
