If you're into walking through mazes and getting lost, you'll love this place. First you have to walk up a set of stairs to reception, then go up one floor to a lift. Now, depending on WHICH lift, you have several options. You see, one lift takes you to the rear apartments and one to the front. In between there are stairs and rooms leading off in different directions. Rosemarie managed to get lost every day. Don't however, take this as a down side. We thought it was hilarious.
The rooms aren't over large but you do have nice size en suites and cupboards and everything is changed each day.
The staff are dressed in typical Bavarian costume and were very helpful although one was limited with her English.
The only downer for us was that there's a nightclub a little down the road and sometimes noise would echo up the street in the wee hours but it wasn't too bad.
I would deffinitely stay here again.
Unique Quality: The rooms at the rear don't have much of a view but the front rooms have stunning vistas over Berchtesgaden to Watzman, Germany's highest mountain. There is a balcony that would be idyllic in summer for just watching the world go by.
The restaurant is truly wonderful. It is very atmospheric and lined with historical items from guns to portraits. Staff are very efficient and knowledgeable. We stayed four nights and ate there three it was so good; bearing in mind we usually eat somewhere different each night.
The breakfast lounge is as good as it gets. Picture windows overlooking the view and plenty to eat. There is also a resting lounge one more level up with similar views.
If you like history there's an interesting portrait you'll pass each day. It is of Helene Sedlmayer, a Munich shoemaker's daughter, mid-19th c. The costume was a present from the King who commissioned her portrait, which is why it looks unusually rich for her station. Apparently she was one of the king's mistresses!
Directions: On the hill on the other side of the Hauptbahnhof in the old town
We arrived by train and checked into the Vierjahreszeitel Hotel at night. In the morning I went out onto our balcony (it wrapped around 2 sides of the room) and was greeted by the most glorious mountain view! It was like being in a postcard with the forested mountains before me and the river and train station down below.
