We are going to Dachau in Sept. by auto. What do they charge to get in to the camp. Do they have headphones or tours in english at the camp without having to come from Munich? We hope to spend 3 days close to Munich in a small hotel. Any suggestions on a nice hotel?

Admission to the museum is free but there is a small charge to pay if you use the carpark - around 3EU if I remember correctly.

from what I'm gathering, it is possible to visit Dachau without use of a paid tour? I like to travel at my own leisure and save money but wasn't sure if I should visit Dachau without a tour guide.
Travel Tips for Dachau
Hire a German College Student
by ATXtraveler
One of the most interesting parts of our whole trip was that we were able to hire a "free" translator... which really helped out on several occassions during the trip.
Since most Germans do not get the opportunity to see their own country, and choose to go elsewhere on vacations instead, you can normally find someone who is interested in touring with you, learning English from you, and will act as your translator when you head off the beaten path.
We all met Christine in Frankfurt, where she met us at the airport, took us to her house, and then went on a 12 day vacation with us around Europe... all she asked for in return was for us to pay for her portion of the hotels and meals! What a great deal!!!
The Dachau's camp history (2)
by d_d
The prisoners had to build a larger camp which was completed in 1938.
The camp office files show a total of more than 206000prisoners registered between 1933 and 1945.
In addition, however many prisoners were taken to Dachau without being registered.

Coming from the catle at left, there's "Café Bäckerei Konditorei Teufelhart" which is of a rather large size. That's a neat place to drink, eat and surf in the Internet. In the evenings of weekends, there are concerts going on.

Spend time in the museum
by Summer33
We got 1 tape recorder for the 4 of us and just shared it but it was actually really interesting and unexpensive. I recommend getting the tape that talks you through the museum, everything is so interesting, spend alot of time there. It was about 105 degrees when we visited and we were absolutely dying from the heat, nevertheless is was beyond words.
Questions and Answers
Q: Ok to bring an infant? "My husband and I plan to visit Dachau in our upcoming trip. We will have a 9 month old infant with us. Would it be inappropriate..."
A: "It will not bother your child at that age, of course, and I can find no mention of minimum age on the Dachau Memorial Museum website..."
