ANNA FESTIVAL (THE BERG)
by kmohandas
Anna festival, called "The Berg" is a 12 day gala beer festval held in Erlangen during end of May/early June every year. This beer festival is the second largest in Germany after the famous October festival of Munich. The festival was started in 1755 AD and was dedicated to the mountain church on the outskirts of Erlangen.
A very high quality of beer called "Bergkirchweth" is specially brewed for this festival. The people of Erlangen and from nearby towns forget every thing and enjoy the festival drinking beer and dancing till late night. Over 1 million people from all over Germany attend the fesival every year. As the festival is not so famous like "Oktoberfest", very few foreigners come for this. Many men and women come here in their traditional dress. It is nice to see women in traditionaldress called "Dirndl".
The beer is served in 1 litre traditional mugs and sold at a price of Euro 7/-. If you return the mug, you get back Euro 5/-. But the mug is worth preserving as a momento. Here you can dance to the wonderful rythem of traditional music sipping beer.
