Travel Tips for Erlangen

Bergkirchweih - Beer Festival

by chris.hh

The Berg is a beer festival with a very long traditon. More the 1,3 million people visit it every year. I have not been there because I am pretty new in Erlangen since my friend moved here. But the Berg is the sixth season - after the four usual ones and carneval... The Berg is a festival where many breweries sell their beer on a hill (Berg) close to the city centre. In former times the beweries had their storages that they built into the mountain. There are many benches under oak trees, and the whole region gets crazy - as it is said. Many people perfer the Berg more then Oktoberfest because it is not that touristic. I will check it this year - maybe we meet? It is always one week starting at Whitsunday.
Cheers - or: Prost!

Erlangen

by MProcher

Erlangen is a city with 100000 inhabitants, located some few kilometers north of Nuremberg. Together with Fuerth these three cities form a triangle where you can hardly recognize the end of one city and the beginning of another.

Erlangen is dominated by two facts: the FAU (Friedrich-Alexander-University) and Siemens. For a long time the company had it's haedquarter in Erlangen. Til today many buildings were or still are Siemens buildings. The most wellknown one is the "Raspberry Palace" (I shall have to take a picture of it...)

A joke in Erlangen says that a third of the 100k inhabitants are Siemensians, a second third are students, and some few others - you can't see them but they must be there, of course.

Today the different buildings of the university are the most dominant visible factor in Erlangen. There is no campus here, the different buildings are spread all over the city. Southern University Area is not in Erlangen but belongs to the university. Besides that some parts of the uni are outsourced to Nuremberg (which doesn't have an own university, just specified universities and some faculties from Erlangen).
The correct name of the university is Friedrich-Alexander-UniversitÀt Erlangen-Nuernberg.

It is great to sudy in Erlangen. There are so many students in the city that young life is dominating everything.

The travelogue shows some November impressions...
