Sightseeing on the road north of Frankfurt

by Psus

Arriving Frankfurt 7:15 AM driving north to Koeln then northeast to Schwelm by 7:30 PM. What sites are there that we should see? A quaint town? A castle? A Roman ruin? A great place to eat? A beautiful church?

I know it's not much time, but I also know there has got to be something there that I just shouldn't miss.

Thanks.

Drive alon the Rhine, best right, but left is not bad neiter. Avoid motorways. You decide: FAST or SCEBIC, impossible to have it both.

Most scenic route would be to drive from Frankfurt to Cologne through the Middle Rhine Valley

> A quaint town?
The Middle Rhine Valley is full of them.

> A castle?
No shortage on them.

> A Roman ruin?
Also many, but often the only remaining are the foundations.
There are some Roman ruins spread over Cologne
http://www.koeln.nicecity.de/english/architecture.htm
Best for Roman ruins in Germany is the city of Trier
http://www.trier.de (but not on the direct route)
Just north of Frankfurt there is the Saalburg, a reconstructed Roman fort

> A beautiful church?
Many. The most important on this route are:
the nearly 1000 years old Mainz Cathedral
http://www.mainz.de/WGAPublisher/online/html/default/MKUZ-5V9EUE.EN.0?backlink=akah-67pdjz.en.6
Cologne Cathedral (the most visited building in Germany)

I would do this trip by train
- castle spotting is nicer/easier from the train
- driving into and parking in the city center of Cologne is not that much fun. And the cathedral is really next to the main railway station.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: FRA
To: Schwelm
Via: Koblenz

With a normal train ticket (valid 2 days) you can make stops as long as they are en route.
