How to go to Sleeping Beauty Castle.

by marysabeatriz

I want to know if the only way to get Sleeping Beauty Castle is on foot, because I have some problems to walk, specially uphill.
Thanks,
Marysa

Hi - a bus will bring you as far as Marienbrucke (the bridge). From there you will have to walk a short distance the rest of the way to Neuschwanstein. It is about a 10 minute walk - just take is slowly and you should be okay. You can stop along the way if you need to. If you can, take a walk to the bridge first for wonderful views of the castle. Enjoy!

Sleeping Beauty Castle? I think you are in the wrong place - that castle is a Disney invention. What I suspect that you are referring to is Neuschwantstein Castle - and yes, there was transportation up the hill last time I was there. Horse drawn carriages.

The horse and carriage is the most fun way to go. It takes you right to the Hohenschwangau Castle. However the one you probably want to see is Neuschwanstein Castle.

Again, the horse and carriage is best. It won't take you the entire way because it stops in a little plaza where there is a restaurant and some other things and you walk the rest of the way. The comment on the web site above is: "Distance from horse carriage stop to Castle Entrance approx. 1000 ft, or 5 minutes by foot" and it is an easy walk. It's uphill but well paved and gentle. Just walk slowly and rest when you need to.

The shuttle bus that goes to the bridge is not for you. If you check the web site, it tells you "The shuttle-bus is unsuitable for disabled visitors and physically handicapped people, since the path from the Jugend/Marienbrücke (Mary's bridge) down to the Neuschwanstein castle is very steep. Walking distance from the Jugend/Marienbrücke (Mary's bridge) to the entrance of Neuschwanstein castle is approx. 2000 ft, or 10 minutes by foot.

So enjoy the horse and carriage and on the way down, stop at the restaurant and have a cool drink while enjoying the castle view. BTW, do you realize there are lots of steps inside the castles?

Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castles

by Nexus7

An interesting story goes with these two castles, which are discussed else where on this page. But this picture depicts Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in the same picture. The white one that is higher up is Neuschwanstein it was built by Kaiser Wilhelm III. Hohenschwangau was built by Wilhelm I.

Holy Ghost hospital church

by iandsmith

In 1748 and 1749 there was constructed in Fussen a building that, in its own right, is reasonably attractive. However, what makes it one of Fussen's standout attractions is the lueftlmalerein on the front.
I defy anyone to walk down Spitelstrasse and not notice the dramatic confronting colours. From any angle it's a winner. It was the last day.....indeed, it was the last hour of my second visit to Fuessen and I determined that I would use the train-waiting time to duck down and see the interior of the Holy Ghost Church.
It was more elaborate than I imagined. Along with the requisite altar-side columns and the usual painting in the middle (pic 2), the church, along with the others in Fuessen, had a lighter atmosphere about it than many other European churches I had visited which was brought about mainly by the bright colours used in the ceiling painting (pic 3).
I also noted that there were balconies where, I assume, those of higher status would be seated above the flock (pic 4).

Once a year the cows come down form the High Alps.

by dabidc

We were lucky to be in the tiny village when the cows were brought down to the valley for the Winter.

They appeared to be without direction so it may not have been so lucky. Fortunatley all was well and no one was hurt when the cows suddenly appeared.

One thing to listen out for is the sound of the bells aorund the animals necks.

Neuschwanstein Palace

by Markyreid

This palace is one of the highlights of the Romantic road journey, and is the most well known aspect of Fussen. Built for King Ludwig the palace was never lived in as it did not meet his standards, suprisingly! Well worth a visit. But make sure you arrive early as you can only visit the palace with a guide and they run guides in three or 4 different languages every 1/2 hour. We arrived at about 10:30 and were able to book in for the 4:30 english tour. I am sure many people missed out on the day as the lines were huge when we left.

Nueschwanstein Castle

by phimpanda

The most fantastic castle in the world I have ever seen. We have to give thanks to King Ludwig II. Many people say he is a mad king but I think he is a genious and talented. It's just breath taking when I went inside and see those magnificant art and crafted.
