Early morning walk
by iandsmith
There's lots of directions you can head in Fuessen, not all of them well trod.
Thus it was that I awoke early one morning and chanced my arm, so to speak, by heading off towards Austria, which only happens to be a kilometre or so up the road. For someone unused to snowfalls, treading through the fresh powder from overnight and with some still falling was a novelty. I can understand that if you had to put up with months of it on end you would be overjoyed when spring arrived but, for me, the early spring snow dump was a joy to behold. I hope these pictures reflect that.
Hohenschwangau Castle

The Hohenschwangau Castle looks pretty cool from the outside. I didn't go in and check it out. I wanted to check out the more famous castle nearby and go on a hike so I didn't have time. Or I didn't make the time!
No it is not Swan Lake.

However the schwangau in the name of the lower castle does I believe mean Swan.
I also believe the Hohen is to do with high. Maybe our German Vters will help me out.
Be that as it may, the lake looks remarkably peaceful with the swans swimming around.
Hike above Neuschwanstein!!
by herzog63
I went on an Awesome hike above the Neuschwanstein Castle! It started out as a small walk to get above the castle to get some better pictures. But It turned into a really beautiful hike! After I had been walking for a half hour or so it started snowing. Then the snow gradually became a real blizzard!! I couldn't even see the trail and my foot prints in the snow were being covered almost immediately! I figured as long as I stayed on the main part of the trail I'd be ok. And I would be able to find my way back. You get beautiful views of the Bavarian Plains on this hike except when it is snowing so hard that you can't see 20 feet in front of you. I saw alot of Antelope or Deer too. This was one of my fond memories of my Europe Trip.
Neuschwanstein Castle

As I said earlier, this is the most photographed landmark in Germany, and probably, the most famous castle in the world. This is the 3rd of Mad Ludwigs great castles, and remarkably, he never even finished it. What you will see on your tour (you must go escorted), is only a small fraction of the finished areas. Make sure you book tickets for Neuschwanstein as it books up quickly. Buses leave from the bottom of the town Schwangau every 30 minutes-ish, with the last one at 5:30 (technically Neuschwanstein Castle is in Schwangau, not Fussen, but because Schwangau is nothing more than two castles and two hotels, I put this with Fussen). The tour itself is under an hour and points out some interesting information. A 6 minute walk from the castle is bridge overlooking it. This is the best spot to get a picture of the entire thing, along with environs below. If you have time there is a walking trail down the hill back to town. It should take you up to 40 minutes.
