Looking for Holly and Bill - Owners of a Hotel in G-P

by Travel_Sharon

Several years ago (2003) I met Americans Holly and Bill who owned a vacation rental in G-P. I do not remember the name of their rental but it sat right along a beautiful (small) river that ran through the city. Am trying to find out if they are still the owners and how to reach them so that I can return to their place. Much thanks to anyone who knows the rental market in G-P and might know these wonderful people.

Perhaps you remember the name of their business when you see it?

For that purpose go to the telephone directory:

www.telefonbuch.de

Put the word "Gästehaus" (Gaestehaus) in the name box, and "Garmisch-Partenkirchen" in the location box. A list of Gästehäuser will appear, even if their name is only "Haus... (something)".

I thought the name "Haus Aspen" sounded very promising, and it is on the river, but it is owned by two German ladies.

The river's name is Loisach. If you want to compare addresses from the telephone directory and the locations go to www.googlemaps.com and search for "Loisachstrasse, Garmisch-Partenkirchen". It will lead you right to the addresses along the river.

Travel Tips for Garmisch-Partenkirchen

photos around GAP - 2 -

by MrBill

These do not really count as tips, but then again, what is better than a good photo to tell a story? View of GAP from the Grainau Hohenweg in the direction of the Olympic Stadium on a January afternoon.

cross country skiing in and around GAP

by MrBill

There are many cross country trails in and around GAP and towards Klais and Seeheld in the direction of Innsbruck, and around Ehrwald, Lermoos and Bieberwier in the other direction. The elevation in GAP is between 700-800 meters and the snow only typically lasts 6-8 weeks before warm weather and/or rain destroys the crosscountry ski trails. The other areas around GAP are higher up to 1000 meters so they hold the snow a little better. Cross country ski equipment can be bought for between EUR150-300 depending on your ability and the quality. A set can be rented for about EUR10 per day. Needless to say, it is usually better to rent if you are only going to do it a few times, and do not know if you like it? Also, spring close out sales are the perfect time to pick-up last year's models and save up to 50-70% on new. Ski heil!

Zugspitzebahn -- the Cable Car

by yooperprof

This was the most dramatic cable car I've ever taken. Getting to the Zugspitze summit required several different modes of transportation, one of them being a kind of rack-railway with long tunnels that bored through thousands of feet of mountain rock. That part of the journey was pretty amazing in itself. But for a person from Kansas, nothing can exceed the excitement and thrill of a cable car hundreds of feet above the snow and ice of an Alp.

The Alps

by TinKan

When here you must go to the Zugspitz and take a look around. The view of the alps from here is awesome. It cost about USD 25 to take the cable car up to the summit but it is worth every penny of it.

Of corse you should pick a clear day. This trip with the camera was not the best one as it was snowing and we were the only ones up there.

Walk from Osterfeldkopf

by PaulKirk

It's about 7-8 miles. Take the Alpspitzbahn cable car. Head down the hill folowing the path to Hochalm (30 minutes). It's a mountain bar & worth a stop. Follow signs to Kreuzeck . Go past the cable car station to the mountain bar Kreuzeck Alm on the next hill ( 20 minutes). Follow signs to Garmischaus & the Hausberg cable car (30 minutes). It's a bar but probably shut. Follow signs to Bayernhaus (15 minutes). Another mountain bar. Follow signs to Partnachalm ( 40 minutes). There's a right turn after about 20 minutes and Partnachalm wil be to your right when you reach the road. It's Another bar. Turn left past the bar & follow signs to Partnachklamm (40 minutes). It's a zigzag path down through the woods. Walk through the gorge & back to town. There are horsedrawn carriage rides from outside the Gasthof Partnachklamm to the Ski Stadium. It's a great walk if you like beer frames and the views are superb. If you think the bars are a bit close try doing it the other way! If you haven't had enough beer there's the Gasthof Partnachklamm, Lenz Hutte and Olmpiahaus at the Ski Stadium once you leave the Partnachklamm! Times are approximate and don't include beer frames. Watch out for Ruhetags. All the bars have wonderful views of the mountains. Enjoy the scenery. Enjoy the beer.
