  • Great Hotel in Garmisch

    by

This is a great hotel to stay in and enjoy the ambiance of an old Bavarian Gasthaus, yet fully modern and up to date. The dining room is excellent and the breakfast buffet is out of this world. Best breakfast we had in all of our travels throughout Europe. Great location, great room, great food -- what more could you ask for.

Unique Quality: Great location, Great food, Great Ambiance - Clean and modern room!

New Year's Ski Jumping - train from Munich/Innsbruck

by Huputiti

Hi!

We have bought tickets for the New year's ski jumping at Garmisch-Partenkirchen on January 1st, 2010. We will leave from Munich in the morning and continue to Innsbruck in the evening. Can anyone recommend what kind of train tickets we should buy and if we should do it in advance? We are two persons.

Bayern-Ticket (Bavaria-Ticket) EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons
This day ticket covers the trip from Munich as far as Mittenwald. It covers furthermore also all local public transport in Munich (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, buses). Buy it on spot from ticket machines or for EUR 2,00 more at the counter.

Mittenwald to Innsbruck
You have 2 options
1. you can buy tickets Mittenwald to Innsbruck e.g. already in Munich
EUR 10,60 pp (international passenger tariff)
2. you can buy the tickets from Mittenwald to Innsbruck on board the trains from Garmisch to Innsbruck
VVT tariff applies (www.vvt.at)
EUR 7,10 to Innsbruck Hbf (main train station)
EUR 7,90 to any tram/bus stop in Innsbruck
(However no idea if there is a service fee for buying on board.)

There are additional trains on this day from Munich to Garmisch. The New Year's Jump has also its "own train station" Kainzenbad - a station only used once a year.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Munich
To: Kainzenbad
and select as means of transport "only local transport".

Hi,

To get from the train station in Garmisch to the ski jump, leave the station and turn left immediately (do NOT cross the street). Stand at the green bus stop. Hop on bus #1 or #2 going in the direction "Klinikum."

I'm not sure that the Bayern ticket will be good for the town busses; just ask the driver. If they're not good, the fare will be 1E50 per person.

Have fun!

I guess I better repeat this:
On the 1st January the trains stop also at Kainzenbad stop. This train stop is directly in front of the ski stadium. Approx. 100 meter.
No need to exit at Garmisch-Partenkirchen station. No need to take a bus to the ski stadium.

Thanks a lot for your replies! Do you happen to know if we can take a train to Innsbruck also from Kainzenbad or if we have to go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen station for that?

And if I understood you correctly, the Bayern-Ticket is valid as far as Mittenwald and in addition we only have to pay for the ticket Mittenwald-Innsbruck?

My apologies, abalada, for not reading your first post carefully!

Just use the DB timetable for a query from Kainzenbad to Innsbruck on this day. I would have to do the same to find the answer.

Yes.

@swandav
Your advice is at least full spot for 364 days of a year ;-)
But on this day it's really more easy just to stay 2 minutes longer on the train.

Travel Tips for Garmisch-Partenkirchen

U S Military only

by etfromnc

The Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is a recreation and relaxation center designed primarily for American military personnel in Europe as a part of our commitment to NATO and trying to convince Europeans that we are not as evil as Jacques Chirac and Osama bin Laden say that we are. It is open, however, to US military from other areas, to military retirees, and to families of military personnel, active or retired.

The Lodge and Resort feature 330 spacious guest rooms, three uniquely themed restaurants, THE POiNT Wellness Club, leisure activities, daily tours, and a recreation programs center, and it has a full service conference facility. Hitler's Headquarters. Such opulence in the midst of some of God's most glorious creation that one is stymied ever more in trying to understand him and the destruction which he caused.

Cows have the Right-of-Way

by lareina

In Garmisch-Partenkirchen it isn't surprising to see traffic stopped for cows going down the road. Their bells will be clanging as they loaf down the narrow roads. The farmers, on foot or bicycle, lead them back from the pastures at the end of the day to their barns. The cows seem to know the paths so well that they could probably go it alone! It is a fun sight to see and a great photo op, but remember the cows have the right of way!

The Eibsee

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Rise on the mountain begins from the picturesque Eibsee with clean green water. It is in a coniferous wood at height of 972 m. The area of this lake is about 2 square km, and the maximal depth is 32 m. There are several wood islands. You may float by boats in summer and skate in the winter.

Cablecar up Hausberg

by kls67

Instead of spending an enormous amount of money (about $35) and time (about an hour traveling) - we chose to jump on the quick little cable car and ride to the top of this mountain. It takes about 10 minutes to get up and I just noticed that they have put all new car's on the cable for an even more comfortable ride up - I was going to admit that the ride itself was a bit "unnerving" a couple of times....

From the top - the views towards Alpspitze and through the Loisach valley are simply breathtaking. The fall colors were overwhelming.

I would advise going before lunch, packing a picnic and hiking around the top for a couple of hours before heading back down. Of course, if you went in the winter, you'd be obliged to ski.

Explore the Older Streets

by lareina

There is much to discover on a stroll through the side streets of Ga-P. I like to head to the older streets and admire the Bavarian detailing. Look for carved doors, shutters, and fences and for the traditional wall paintings called luftlmalerei. There are a few fountains and watering wells. Also notice the well-kept window boxes bursting with geraniums.
