rustic cabins and campground

We have stayed in the Edelweiss Lodge before but on our last trip we decided to try out the cabins. Our reservation was for a "rustic cabin" which means that there was no bathroom in the cabin but instead we needed to use the bathhouse. Fortunately for us, the bathhouse was right across the street - however, for others it meant a walk down the road or drive to the bathhouse (parking provided).

The cabin itself was small but cozy. While they advertise that it can sleep 6, there were four of us and we were pretty crowded once you got our stuff in there. A family with younger children would be more in line with the sleep 6 concept. There is a bedroom with a double-bed and a bunk bed as well as a loft that had room for at least two adults. The ladder going up to the loft was tricky so I wouldn't recommend very young ones up there. The rest of the cabin consisted of a table and chairs, microwave and small fridge, and a television and DVD player. There are grills outside and each cabin has a front porch.

In the bathhouse, there are plenty of shower stalls (male are separate from female), sinks, and toilets. Everything was clean and tidy. The center room of the bathhouse had washers and dryers, vending machines, and a couple electronic games.

In the summertime when they are busy (we went in November) the campground has a library to borrow DVDs and books.

Cabins have bedding linens but no towels. Come prepared.

Edelweiss is designed for American military and their guests so you must have access or be an authorized guest to use this facility -- there is a gate and they check IDs. The Kaserne where it is located has a commissary, base exchange, and gas station for those who are authorized. It is about a 15 minute walk to the Edelweiss Lodge where you can use their facilities for meals, pool, and activities.

Overall, we had a great experience. Next time, however, we will reserve a deluxe cabin so we have our own bathroom in the cabin -- getting up in the middle of the night when it is freezing temperatures only to have to walk across the street was not fun! But at least the cabin was nicely heated so you quickly warmed up back at the cabin. And you cannot beat the views!

Unique Quality: A camping experience that offered privacy and peacefulness.

Calm and relaxing - meets your needs and wants

We stayed here on our first trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen - a fantastic experience and we will definitely go back!

For those looking for a more American hotel experience, this is the place. Nice sized rooms with private balconies, ice machines, television with American shows, and everyone speaks English. Why? Because this is a hotel designed as a resort for the American military and their guests.

The hotel has a number of day trips and outings that you can sign up for. Our sister, who came with us, was able to catch a last minute horse-drawn carriage ride through the town immediately after we arrived. As we waited for her to return, we enjoyed sitting in the beautiful, high ceiling lobby with stone fireplace. In the morning, the buffet breakfast was inexpensive but hearty - complete with made-to-order omelets. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful.

The hotel has a pool, game room, shops, activities for the kids, and is not too far from downtown. Across the street in the Kaserne is a small BX and commissary for those eligible.

Unique Quality: A wonderful retreat for military members, both active duty and retired. It is sometimes difficult to get reservations when you want them unless you sign up far in advance. Must be eligible to get reservations and guests must be cleared 7 days in advance.

Best Hotel Experience Yet

No hotel is more welcoming than Edelweiss. In a location this beautiful, every room has a unforgettable view, but the hotel itself is also something to remember. With three restaraunts, an excellent pool area, a free wifi lounge, and daily guided tours available, a stay at Edelweiss is no hassle. The staff was friendly and helpful, the grounds are well maintained, and the food was far above the average. I have no complaints whatsoever, and cannot wait to return.

Unique Quality: The views of the Alps and surrounding countryside were fantastic! The real highlight, however, are the different tours provided by the hotel. There are trips to nearby lakes, a tour of Mad King Ludwig's Neushwanstein Castle, and a day trip tour of Dachau, to name a few.
