A week in Garmisch Partenkirchen (Summer)
In this travelogue I hope to provide an idea of what we do when we visit Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Having made many visits to the town hopefully it encompasses a lot of what you can do and what can be seen. It's based on arriving on a Saturday and having a week in the area with the first full day on Sunday. It takes into account the ruhetags when bars in the hills can be closed and is based on some of the What to do tips I have posted and adds some other information. Yes we do drink a lot of beer but we also walk it off. The times are all very approximate because we all walk at different paces. The evenings in town are your choice but try to eat at the Frauendorfer, Werdenfels and Braustubl. All the descriptions are brief and hopefully my postings will help. it's a busy week and takes in a lot of walking and scenery plus the obligatory beer frames.

Eating on Christmas Day in Garmisch
My husband and I are spending a few days in Garmisch over Christmas, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me of any special Christmas dinners or buffets offered by any of the local restaurants. We are going to be without a car, so we're relying on getting everywhere by foot or public transportation, and we'll be staying at a hotel very near the Garmisch train station. Can anyone tell me of places near there where we might make reservations for Christmas dinner?
RE: Eating on Christmas Day in Garmisch
The Frauendorfer is a hotel that attracts a lot of people so check their website. It's Bavaria laid on with a trowel! Normally there is live local music from a local accordion player. It's very popular so booking is advisable if they are open. The Werdenfelser Alm is close by in Ludwigstrasse too. Further away is the Braustuberl by Loisachbrucke or the hotel Graseck which is reached by a small cable car for the guests and diners. I think they all have websites. Renzo's is a very good Italian opposite the Rathaus. I don't know what will be open but it is a winter resort so I think they will be. Don't worry about the lack of transportation. The local bus connects with all the cable car stations. The cable cars will be shut on Christmas day but open before and after. Get up into the hills when you can and enjoy the scenery. Even in snow the paths are cleared and you can walk back to town from most of them. I'll be interested to see what the local response is on what's open too.
RE: RE: Eating on Christmas Day in Garmisch
I tried Renzo's and we ate lunch at Forsthaus Graseck on Christmas Eve (both very good).
Just for anyone else who might have this question...many restaurants are open Christmas day. We didn't need reservations (although some do require reservations, as they have a special Christmas menu). We ate Christmas Eve dinner at El Greco, which was around the corner from our hotel. Christmas dinner was at Asia City. El Greco was also open on Christmas Day, as was Renzo's. I was surprised at what was actually open on Christmas Day...it was mostly souvenir shops and restaurants, and the local busses were running as well.
