Travel Tips for Garmisch-Partenkirchen

photos around GAP - 4 -

by MrBill

These do not really count as tips, but then again, what is better than a good photo to tell a story? This is the Zugspitze from the Austrian side looking at it from Ehrwald at about 13.00 on a January afternoon. It was bright and sunny.

cross country skiing - 3 -

by MrBill

There are so many walking trails in and around Garmisch. They are all well marked and many are maintained in winter. However, ski trails are not walking paths for you or for your dog. The ski trails are clearly marked with this sign indicating DO NOT WALK on the trail. It destroys the perfect grooming needed for classic cross country skiing. Also, when every where is white and clean, it is almost disgusting to see where dogs and relieved themselves everywhere. Please have some common curtiousy and respect the cross country skiers, their trails, and everyone's right to a clean environment. Thanks. Cross country ski equipment can be bought for between EUR150-300 depending on your ability and the quality. A set can be rented for about EUR10 per day. Needless to say, it is usually better to rent if you are only going to do it a few times, and do not know if you like it? Also, spring close out sales are the perfect time to pick-up last year's models and save up to 50-70% on new. Ski heil!

local fare with local flare - 2 -

by MrBill about garmischer brauhaus

As you can see from these walls, they have been smoke covered for many years, but when they need to repaint, they cannot touch the murals, so they need to paint around them. The furniture is old, original, and along with the ceramic oven, warm & inviting on a cool day, cool & refreshing on a hot day. Outside the Garmischer Brauhof, is a beer garden where you can sit in the summertime. Just down the street is the Isar river. My favorite Bavarian dish is Jaeggerschnitzel und pommes. The veal cutlet comes in a rich, mushroom gravy, which adds flavour to the french fries or pan fried potatoes. All washed down with some of Bavaria's legendary beer. I usually take the Helles, which is an Export or Lager beer. If it is hot outside, then a nice Weissbier is good, too.

walking through the Partnach Gorge

by hattifnatten

The hike through the Partnachklamm (gorge) was one of the highlights of my stay in Garmisch.
The pretty country road leads to its entrance past cow meadows, the entrance costs 2 Euro (unless you live there), and the experience is quite unforgettable.
Remember that it may get quite cold down at the bottom of the gorge, even if it's warm and beautiful outside (granted, I was there in late October), and dress in layers, preferablty into something waterproof.
Plenty of trails as you exit -- all extremely beautiful !

Partnach River

by antistar

Dividing the two villages in half this fiercesome, if shallow, Alpine river comes tearing down from the mountainsides leaving the evidence of its devastating path in its wake. By the thundering waterfalls, like the one pictured from near my hotel, lie piles of mountainside debris like tree trunks ripped straight out of the ground and deposited miles down river. In the summer the river looked harmless from the town bridge, but in the spring the snows of the mountains melt and cause water levels of the Partnach rise dangerously.
