Koeningsdorf Jugendhergeberg (Youth hostel): Historic Youth Hostel

This youth hostel usually caters to large groups, but they will host smaller groups and families. They also offer a large camp ground with bathroom and dining facilities for people who want to sleep under the Bavarian stars.

The hostel is divided into multiple buildings spread across 3-4 acres of land. The main house has the office, dining room, a small area for coffee and late night snacks and classrooms.

The typical breakfast you'll eat consists of breads, meat slices, cheese, soft boiled eggs and juice. It's a simple breakfast, but good enough to start your day with.

Dinners can be prepared special for your group, and the dinners are always traditional Bavarian fare. Surprisingly, the food was VERY good. We ate everything from semi-knoedel (a large dumpling typically covered with a mushroom or brown sauce), spaetzle, and my favorite- dampf nudeln (a large moist sweet bread usually covered with vanilla sauce)

The sleeping quarters are located in two large long houses, where there are multiple floors of rooms. The rooms typically do not have a private bathroom, but they are equipped with a standard twin bed and a sink. Restrooms and showering facilities are adequate and if you look hard enough, you can find a single shower and single toilet. The only downside is that noise carries VERY easily, so if someone shouts in the hallway, you'll hear it.

Surrounding the youth hostel there are trails that go into the woods where you can hike. There are also informative and interactive stations along some of the trails at which you can learn about nature.

The most interesting tidbit about the youth hostel is the history of it. The hostel was actually built by the Nazis as a training center for the Hitler Youth. The center was functioning before and during WW2 and was closed with the defeat of the Nazi party.

The history and the nature are the two only and most alluring qualities regarding this location.

I found the Hitler Youth connection to be very interesting, and I admit it was creepy at night when the hostel would get dark, the halls would empty and you knew that over 60 years ago a member of the Hitler Youth was sleeping in the same room you were. Their bunkers were hastily abandoned, and I am sure with the right equipment or a trained eye there are bound to be artifacts in the rubble of the buildings and bunkers.

The craters created by the bombing are less visible in the summertime when the vegetation is dense, but if you look closely and pay attention, you'll easily see them.

The woods are all accessable, although you will want to practice caution due to the bunkers and holes that are all throughout the area. It would be very easy to fall into one of the holes and be seriously injured. So practice caution and beware.

On a side note: I stayed at this facility for the entire time I was in Koeningsdorf/Bad Toelz, and members of the staff I worked with and myself included all had strange experiences in the main house at Koeningsdorf. There was a room called Lenggries in the main building that had a very foreboding and eerie feeling when you entered into it, and everyone had the distinct feeling of dread and fear when they walked through it. Many of my co-workers and members of the staff were convinced that the youth hostel was haunted. You can form your own opinion, but the place definitely is creepy at night.
