boats to Switzerland

by PhillyJohn

Are there boat trips from Lindau to the Swiss side of Bodensee? If so, do they run on weekdays this early in the season?

Hi,

the boats to Rorschach already operate from April 30 (twice a day), though more frequent (up to 5 times on weekdays) after 27 May. Try
http://www.bodensee-radweg.com/schifffahrt.htm, or directly through www.bsb-online.com (look for "Fahrplan Hrühling 2006").

Have a nice trip!
P.

I was hoping to get across from Lindau early this Tuesday morning (May 9), but it seems that the Lindau - Rorschach line doesn't run until 15:30. So, I'm thinking of taking the Bregenz-Konstanz line at 9:44 from Lindau and then taking the train from Konstanz to Luzern.

My question: is the boat trip to Konstanz a worthwhile venture, or would it be more scenic just to take the train from Lindau to Luzern? I'm planning on taking one of the Sundowner or Bodensee Loop cruises on Monday afternoon anyway.

PhillyJohn... maybe we'll see you there?

If you're already doing the cruise you might as well take the train on tuesday - also a great way to see enjoy the scenery. And depending on your route (more on www.bahn.de) you'll probably get to see the lake at some point(s) as well!

Lindau to Lucerne, scenic

by train to Friedrichshafen Hafen (harbour)
by ferry to Romanshorn
by train to Lucerne

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Lindau
To: Luzern
Via: Romanshorn

Just check that the "Products" list shows also SCHIFF (= ship, i.e. the ferry).
And that it is one of the direct trains from Romanshorn to Lucerne, i.e. the Voralpen-Express

Also very interesting is the Zeppelin Museum directly in the harbour railway station in Friedrichshafen.

Vielen Dank! I would never have known to look for that; it fits perfectly with when I want to get to Luzern!!!

Oh...forgot to ask... is the ferry covered by my Germany/Switzerland Eurailpass?

RE: RE: boats to Switzerland

No, but an Eurail Pass will give you 50% discount.
I.e. EUR 3,30 instead of the normal ticket price of EUR 6,60.

Travel Tips for Lindau

Lindau Greeter

by travelfrosch

As we stopped for a rest along the wall on the east side of the island, a four-legged local came up to greet us. He was quite happy to spend quite a few minutes with us, sauntering between Sara and me to maximize his potential petting. Finally, satisfied by our attention, he rushed off to an urgent appointment with a field mouse.

Harbour

by Cristian_Uluru

The picturesque harbour of Lindau was built on the south coast of the island in 1811. At the entrance of the harbour there is a Lion (the symbol of Bavaria) 6 meters tall, and a lighthouse 35 meters tall. Both of them are one of the symbol of the town.
From here departed the ferry to Bregenz (Austria) and Switzerland.
