Peace and quiet during the Euro2008
"Everybody's passing by"
When driving car, you can easily miss Marktschellenberg just by looking from the wrong window. The church stands tall in the very side of the road nr. 305 Salzburg-Berchtesgaden trying to tell people to stop to this small village with very little to offer -except peace, quiet and breathtaking scenery. And that was exactly we were looking for after listening the chants of swedish, croatian and greek football fans..
"Sleep tight"
There is one or two hotels in Marktschellenberg but I think the village can easily accommodate as many tourists as there is inhabitants - 1800- thanks to the huge amount of Ferienwohnung. The prices for the villas and apartments are very reasonable since the fact that there's very little to do in the village. But for a traveller who wants to have a tight sleep in south bavarian village near to many interesting places, Marktschellenberg is a place to stay.
"Sauron's eye"
Everybody's heard about Eagle's Nest, the present for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday by Martin Bormann. Nowadays it's called Kehlsteinhaus and it is a magnificient place but what really is impressive, the building is seen in every valley and village in the area like the eye of Sauron. Also you can spot all the villages from up there.
Kehlsteinhouse is the main tourist magnet in the area. but Austrian border is only five minutes away and on the other side lies Salzburg, a town worth visiting as many times as possible. Also everyone who's interested in hiking, biking, climbing and alpine skiing can find a peaceful place to rest in Marktschellenberg.
