4 days in the area: what to do?

by aventos

Hello, we are travelling to memmingen and staying for 4 days.
We want to visit füssen and castles, and not munchen.
Have you got suggestions to organise this trip? We want to see nature, lakes, walk, ect. Thank you very much

Memmingen is the gateway to the lovely Allgäu region and just very short trips away from other lovely places:

Landsberg am Lech (60 km east) - wonderful old town

Augsburg (95 km north-east) - just north of Landsberg, another great historic town, famous for the so-called Fuggerei, one of the very early social housing developments in history.

Ulm (60 km north) - old city on the Danube, a lot of very old buildings of historic significance, city wall, one of the biggest fortifications in Germany, and the cathedral has the highest church spire in the world (161.5 metres); on a fine day you can see as far as the Alps.

Lake Constance = Bodensee (70 km south to Lindau) - Lindau itself is spectacular, most cruise ships stop there, so you can cruise the whole lake and visit other towns like Meersburg and Konstanz, and Mainau, an island with a castle and flowers, in the lake near Konstanz. You can also cross over to Switzerland by ferry, and visit the fantastic town of Stein am Rhein and the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen.

Wangen im Allgäu (45 km south, on the way to Lake Constance) - lovely old town with fabulous facade paintings on most houses of the historic centre.

Salem (100 km south-west; north of Lake Constance) - a castle and Affenberg (= Monkey Hill), a place where they have Berber monkeys who steal food from your pockets if you hide it there. See here: http://www.affenberg-salem.de/

Lakes and walks: If you go to www.googlemaps.com and enlarge the region south of Memmingen, and look south of the motorway A 12, you will see lots of lakes which are not only good for watersports, boating, and swimming. But there are also lots of walks around the lakes, as for example at Grüntensee. One of my childhood favourites was Alpsee, west of Immenstadt.

Oberstdorf (75 km south): If you love hiking I would not miss this place. There are great cablecars up the Nebelhorn and Fellhorn, both great alpine skifields in winter and great for walking in summer and autumn. They also have walks you can access from the valley, and, of course, you can also walk up to Nebelhorn (about 2200 m) from the township.

From Oberstdorf it is only a short drive to Kleinwalsertal which is another fantastic area for alpine hiking. If you look on googlemaps this is south-west of Oberstdorf, you will see towns named Riezlern and Hirschegg.

And lots and lots more...

Travel Tips for Memmingen

Westertor

by Cristian_Uluru

The walls of the old town was built in 1181 and new parts were added between the 13th and the 15th century. Many kilometers were demolished in the 19th century but in some parts of the town you can still see them. One of the best gateways of the town is the Westertor (now in restauration) built in 1648.

Antonierhaus

This ex monastery and hospital was the ancient founded by the order of St. Anthony. It was built in1383 on the site where previously there was a castle. Now it is the home of the library of the town.

I give thanks to Ryanair, if they did not fly from here to Ireland, I would never ever have visited this fantastic place. Memmingen is the 5th biggest town in the Swabia region. The origins of the town go back to the Roman Empire. The old town, with its many courtyards, castles and patricians' houses, palaces and fortifications is one of the best preserved in southern Germany

The nice town of Memmingen

by Cristian_Uluru

The town of Memmingen is very nice.

It is located about 100 Km west of Munich, on the border with the Baden Wurttember Region.

The Medieval town is very interesting with the nice Rathaus, Siebendacherhaus and the Martinskirche.

Enjoy your visit!!!
