Any help as to the best way to go from Munich to Butzbach (just north of Frankfurt) by train and can this be done as a day trip?
You can take an ICE train to Frankfurt and then change into a regional train, alltogether it takes a bit more than four hours. Regular fare is 95 Euro, but if you book in advance you can save a lot. Advance fares start from 29 Euro, but then you have to take the train you booked.Use the link given to you in the post above.
A day trip? If you don't mind spending more than eight hours in trains, it can be done, but an overnight stay would be much more comfortable.

I loved just wandering the little streets especially around Marienplatz. There are some great little shops to browse in. I loved the book stores as well. I like to collect a book on each place I go to for a reminder of my trip. One thing that amazed me was that dogs were allowed just about anywhere, the airport, shops and in eating places. I was forever getting disorientated in the underground. It was like an never-ending maize.
According to a local who was feeling friendly, there are three beers/breweries in Munich for three major groups.
1. Hofbrauhaus: All around beer. Popular with tourists and locals of all ages.
2. Augustiner: The beer for the young, hip crowd. Also the brewery with the highest rated beer garden in Munich. (walk left out of the Westbahnhof toward Nymphenburg palace to find the Augustiner beer garden.)
3. Lowenbrau: The beer for bitter old men as it has a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Shops.
Supermarkets are every where, but if you want one in the centre of Munich Kaufhaus at Karlsplatz, & Multistore and Karlstadt both in Neuhausersrtaßs, all have excellent food halls. The one in Karlstadt is upmarket but regular goods are priced inline with anywhere else. It’s worth a visit to see the outstanding range of products.
This was lovely, even though part of it was being restored when I visited.
The castle is quaint and orpulent in its lavishness. Amazing artwork and richness in the decorations.
This was Ludwig's favourite palace and I can see why -- it's really magical and there's the lovely gardens outside!
I enjoyed this day trip to the schloss!
