Getting from Salzburg to Munich Airport

by luckykelly

Hi!
My friends and will be travelling from Salzburg to Munich Airport on Monday February 22nd next.
1. How does one get from the train station to the airport?
2. How long does this journey take?
3. As our flight is departing at 19.30 in the evening would it be possible or worthwhile to visit Munich for a couple of hours on the Monday?
4. If we did go into Munich where would we leav our luggage?
5. If anyone has any feasible ideas we would be happy to consider them!
Many thanks.

I'd rather recommend to continue by rail from Salzburg to Munich /Central Station, as there is a Fast-train connection ("S1")to Munich Airport. It would be easy, to store your lugagge at Central Station, before you proceed to the airport.Fast Train from Munich Central Station will take about 25 minutes.
If you arrive in Salzburg by air, there is also a direct (expensive / EUR 49,-) bus to Munich Airport, taking about 2.5 hours

If I remember correctly, trip from the main station to the airport took about 45 minutes by S-Bahn (commuter train). I seem to remember there are luggage lockers at the main train station, which means you would be looking at heading out to the airport at around 4:30 for the customary 2 hour prior to flight check in.

Yes,you are perfectly right! The 25 minutes was the distance to the late former airport! Thanks !!

Buy a Bayernticket (Bavaria Pass) to go to Munich. The ticket is a day pass valid for up to five people from 9 a.m. on working days to 2 a.m. or so of the following day (the 9.a.m. restriction does not apply if you travel on a weekend or holiday when there's no rush-hour). It sells for EUR 28 or 30 at the counter.
Please note, the ticket is *only* valid on regional trains - not ICs or ICEs within Bavaria including Salzburg. But an IC is really not that much faster between Munich and Salzburg. You can even use the ticket to take the S-Bahn from Munich central station to Munich airport, as well as on any other form of public transport in Munich over the day.

1. Your best choice would be to purchase a "Bayern-Ticket," as turtleshell recommended Up to 5 of you could travel on one EUR 28 ticket. There is a DB ticket machine at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) where you can buy the ticket. Be aware this ticket, is only valid on the local (such as RB and RE) trains on the route, not the fast trains (such as IR, IC, EC, and ICE). That said, the local trains are only about 20 minutes slower getting you to the airport. The quickest connection directly from Salzburg to Munich Airport is to take a train from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Munich Ost (not Munich Hauptbahnhof). From there, take the S-8 (not the S-1) to the airport.

2. Scheduled travel time is 2:23 with fast trains, 2:43 using slower trains on which the Bayern-Ticket is valid.

3,4, and 5. Yes, it's possible. There are coin operated left-luggage lockers and a left luggage locker at Munich Hauptbahnhof. Your Bayern-Ticket is even valid on the Munich public transport.

Enjoy your trip!

Mark

Sorry for the many typos -- a screaming baby in the background broke my concentration a bit! ;o}

I meant "coin-operated luggage lockers and a left-luggage COUNTER"...

visit the OKTOBERFEST, the biggest public festival of the world (this year from 16th September through 3rd October 2000) Munichs beergardens (Biergarten) are a must! My preferred garden is the one at the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm) in the English Garden (Englischer Garten).

WEINHAUS NEUNER

A relatively small weintube on the left side and a much bigger good quality restaurant on the right side.

I just had a glass of excellent Wurzburger white wine from Franken region and did not eat this time!

Riders' path

Well, I've never seen before that there is special sign for riders where to go in the city park. This sign I saw in English Garden and I was very surprised. So I decided to make a photo and to show to my friends because I think they don't believe me if I don't give them a proof :-)

Packing List

In November when we were there, when the sun got out it was actually very warm. Warm enough to have a drink outside. Don't be fooled. As soon as you move into shade the temperature pulmets. Dress in layers is the message

by mickle229

The Konigsee is a lake Southeast of Munich, crossed by an electric boat. I was there in early Autumn and it was one of my 'top 10' travel experiences. The lake was perfectly still, the trees were just beginning to change colors, the smell of wood smoke was in the air, and the tops of the mountains were barely dusted with snow. We stopped at a rustic church halfway up the lake, and had strudel and coffee outside under the trees. Doesn't get much better than that.
