Transportation

What are some options for travelling from Munich West (Memmingen Airport) to the main train station in Munich?
Re: Transportation
by K_V_B
Memmingen Airport is not anywhere near "München West". The airport does have instructions on how to get to and away from it on it's website however:

"Munich West" hahaha, Memmingen is closer to Lake Constance than Munich.
Let me guess: Ryanair?

Did not know, Regierungsbezirk Schwaben is Oberbayern. Looks like marketing people are very inventive :(
I guess, the best is to use Bayern Länderticket as far as you can because it is valid in entire Bavaria and for single traveler it costs 21 Euro from the DB automat. For two or more it's 29 Euro.
Otherwise the simple ticket from Memmingen to Munich is 20.40 Euro. So - depending where you go - the Bayern Länderticket could be better. You can go as far as Salzburg or Garmisch or Würzburg for the same price.

There's a bus service, too but a ticket (one way) goes for as much as 15 Euro. So I would venture to say that the Bayern-Ticket is going to be the best option as this will be valid for public transport in Munich as well.
But you may want to check the timetable of both - bus and train - as well.
Bus:

Train:

You can book the Bayern Ticket by choosing "only local transport" and than add a return ticket to the basket. The "special fare" for 21 Euro will be the Bayern Ticket.

Something new learned again after having lived in Munich for 10 years:
1) Munich obviously reaches that far as Memmingen already, but I am afraid its just Rhyanair's phantasy and a bus will take more than 1 hour to take you to Munich
2)Memmingen has an airport, OK, why not, maybe some remains of a former military area, BUT I think it should be forbidden to call this airport there "München West"
"150km from Munich" would be a much better name !
Travel Tips for Munich
Marvellous decoration at doorway arches
by Trekki
Sorry that I only have one photo to show what I want to describe, but the weather wasn’t that brilliant and I did only look and forget to take the camera out of my backpack.
It seems that these kinds of decorative stones at the top of doorway arches are very popular. Many of these are old and many seem to show symbols of the groups of people who might have lived there. For example there is a road with several rows of townhouses which all have a shepherd theme in their door stones. So lovely. In Munich’s town centre there are many stones with reference to merchandising, and even the many statues of saints and especially Madonna statues at the corner of houses.
Make sure to just walk around the town when the weather is good. "Doorway arch stone hunting" is very much rewarding :-)
Residenz
by diageva
You can get to Residenz walking from Marianplatz or from Odeonsplatz. This is a beautiful palace with an expectacular garden in the front, that like others where partly destroyed during the II WW. At the entrance you will find 2 green lions .. you have to do something to the lions ... I don't remember what ...:))) but I did .... and one year later I can say that nothing have happend ? .... :))) ok ... I am still alive ....
Neuschwanstein Castle
by CandS
This photo was taken while we went on a hike to the bridge (Marienbrucke) nearby...
There are some amazing views on that walk and I would recommend it to anyone!! :) The bridge is very high though so it can be scary for people with a fear of heights.
Beer Gardens
by Fen
The beer garden season starts in May and ends with the Oktoberfest however, on warm and sunny weekends, many of them open their doors even outside that period. Beer gardens are a very family affair and of course food is always sold. If you go to Munich in the Summer wouldn't be complete without a trip to a beer garden.
That's why I went in September and that weekend it rained most of the time.
Where to go?
by einokj
It may be rather difficult to decide where to go skiing. From Munich, I usually went to Zillertal since it is rather close and offers plenty of slopes. To help defining where to go, use some of the well done ski-oriented webservices such as:
http://www.adac-skiguide.de/ You can rent ones if you don't have. In Germany and Austria, you should go to Skischule- marked offices to rent skis or snowboards or any other equipment.
