Christmas Day in Munich

by Alex49

Hello Everyone, my family and I are traveling to Munich, arriving on Christmas Eve. Can anyone recommend what to do on Christmas day in Munich. Looks like many businesses will be closed and tours are not available. Are there church service that we can attend? Suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks, Alex

It will be very quiet. Does your hotel have a restaurant? Make sure you book ahead for the 25th, as many restaurants will be closed.
For church services you can check here:

It's in Germany, but if you scroll down, the first link will take you to the Catholic services, the ones below to the Protestant ones.

As Christmas Eve is the more important day in Germany could you get to Munich in time to attend a Church service that evening, we did that and the service was stunningly beautiful, choir boys, candles, beautifully decorated Church.
We were in Stuttgart but Munich would celebrate the same way. There may be midnight services in some places.
I would also recommend that you book a restaurant for lunch on the 25th but take a fat wallet with you, the prices can be shock inducing.

come in September and attend Octoberfest. It was one of the best and biggest parties I have ever been to. (That is if you beer) going to the Haufbraus Haus and watching everyone sing and dance with huge beers in their hands.

If you´re planning on staying longer (living & working here) but don´t have a very good knowledge of the German language you might want to contact TANDEM which is a language school situated here in Munich. You can subscribe at their database and on this way get a Learning Partnership:

The Christmas Market in Munich

by Fen

The Yuletide spirit comes to life in the Bavarian capital when Munich’s Lord Mayor formally opens the Christmas Market at 5.00pm on the Friday before the first Advent. Thousands gather into the Marienplatz, the heart and soul of the city, to watch the almost 30-metre-high Christmas tree sparkle for the first time in all its regal splendour as it is lit up by 2,500 candles. The aroma of Gluehwein (hot spiced wine) and the glistening of angel hair remind everyone of the magic of Christmas.

The Christmas market starts on the 28th November - 24th December 2003

Gartnerplatz

by barryg23

Gartnerplatz lies at the heart of Glockenbach, the area to the south of the Altstadt. A lively district with great restaurants and bars, it was quite surprising to see so few tourists in the streets in this area.
