Trying to Visit Maximum Christmas Markets

by kenkel22

Hi everyone - I am visiting Munich for 2 nights and the better part of 3 days. I have been one other time and am taking other family members this time. I am planning to visit Salzburg to go to that market for a couple hours, and also thought about visiting Nuremberg this time for it's market. We are staying very near the Munich train station so will visit the main Marienplatz(sp) Christmas markets nearby. I would like to train it to one other quaint village that is reasonable doable given the short time we are there. We are there to 'do the Christmas markets' and are interested in german made crafts and gifts (as opposed to just hitting Kathy Wolfart store - I probably mispelled that).

Any suggestions are much appreciated. I will have 8 people traveling. Will I be able to get the good train fare deal with this many people?

thanks!

from my Munichpage :
The most pupluar christmas-market in Munich is on Marienplatz and in parts of Kaufingerstrasse.

BUT in my opinion the very best of all is the Weihnachtsmarkt in Schwabing, directely on the square of Münchner Freiheit.

In Schwabing you will be able to buy small works of local artists and you are able to taste great food from all over the world :
My favorites were :
Scamorzzo - a bread with a thick slice of roasted cheese
Soup from Eritrea
Garlic bread

For the train fare, you can visit the German Rail web site: (www.bahn.de). Once there, you might wish to visit the link for the Bavarian Laender Ticket. A single ticket covers up to five persons for one price. The ticket also allows for free usage on several of the local transit systems. Salzburg is considered as part of both the Austrian and German rail systems. A laender ticket would be valid for travel there as well as to Nuremberg. Gary

Travel Tips for Munich

Marienplatz--great shops,...

by jhawk1000

Marienplatz--great shops, entertainment. This at Fasching in Munich was jam packed but fun. Years ago was in the Munich marathon. Much to do and see. Also, flying into Munich airport is now a breeze and much easier than Frankfurt

Neuschwanstein Castle again...

by CandS

The magical Castle Neuschwanstein...definiately a must see!!!! :) I have always wanted to see it, ever since I first saw a photo of it many years ago. Of all the places in Europe, this was the one place I wanted to go most...I am so glad I finally got there. :)

How to save money on food

by sabsi

My favourite thing in Munich was the picnics we had in the beergardens. As Munich is kinda on the pricey side we could have never afforded to order everything we ate from the beergardens but we brought our own food. You are allowed to do so in most beergardens. Some people even bring table cloths and everything. We only brought cooked chickens and Pretzels and raddish, cheese etc etc.

Obviously you are not allowed to bring your own beer though ;)

Packing List

by rabbit

A reasonable suitcase like in any other town will be fine.
Leave space for the things you will buy... If you plan to visit the opera, ballet or a classical concert, you should take really good evening dress like long skirt and high-heels (or a dark suit and tie if you're a male).
Munich people seem to dress up a bit more than I noticed it in any other city I've been to.

They even refused to let us in a music-club ('Nachtcafe') on a saturday night because my female friend and me didn't wear evening clothing!
As Munich lies about 600m high and is quite near the Alpes you must be prepared for quite changeable and even cold weather in spring: it can be sunny 25 degrees in one week and snowing the next...

Lovely village to shop and see buildings

by BruceDunning

This quaint little village gets more than its share of tourists during the year. Most of the buildings are decoratively painted with murals on the outside walls. They are of scenes and alpine look. The valley coming into the town is real nice drive. The sell many trinkets including the traditional clocks, knives, Germanic apparel, and candy, fudge, cheese, and much more. The shopping is quite pleasant so long as not many tourists in town.
