3 days in December Munich and surrounding ares

by Rosstipha

Hi Will be in Munich for 3 days in December with my girlfreind.
Arriving Saturday morning, depart 9ish Monday night.

Any tips on what to see and do in Munich, was hoping to get to a Game Bayern play the day I arrive but I believe my chances of tickets are slim to none.
I also want to visit Neuschwanstein castle on the sunday if anyone can recomend a tour company or how to do it on public transport. i cant stop over as our hotel is paid for in Munich. Also want any recomendations on a decent night spot for a pair of 28 year olds.

Please help an uneducated englishman thats only knowledge of Munich is Oktoberfest and Bayern Munich.

Thanks

Ross

I am going to Munich next week and we're on a tight budget. We got a good rate at Four Points Sheraton Munich OlympiaPark. It's a little out of the city but very close to public transportation. For two nights we got a rate of 184 Euros (during Oktoberfest...)

The only Bayern game in December for which you have a slim chance of getting tickets is the game against Hertha BSC which will take place in the period of 18 to 20 December. All other games are already sold out.

See more info on the Bayern website:

www.fcbayern.de

Sometimes there are auctions of card holders who have no time to attend a game, this is already published on the ticketing page.

Let me tell you that there is a second great club in Munich, and if you would be happy to just attend a game in the stadium you could check out the second division club 1860 München. This is the traditional club (already champions before Bayern could even dream of it) and loved by everybody who logically hates FC Bayern ;-)))

http://www.tsv1860.de/

There are many pages on VT with info about other things to do in Munich. Please check these out. It would also help to have a printed travel guide at hand when you go to Munich. Just an idea ;-)))

Hello Ross,

if you can't attend a play of FC Bayern or 1860 but still want to do see the Allianz Arena, you can do a Guided Tour there. Unfortunately I don't know more about it, but I'm sure you can find some info on the web.

I don't know what you expect of Munich or what you would like to see, but some ideas are:

* Olympiapark (they have a tower there with a view over the city)
* Schloss Nymphenburg (castle from 17th century)
* Frauenkirche (cathedral)
* Hofbräuhaus (famous and traditional pub)
* Englischer Garten (huge and beautiful garden with lots to do)

But as Kakapo2 said - you should out the Travel Pages on Munich and you will find lots of info :-)

Travel Tips for Munich

Wandering the old streets of...

by Big_Sugar56

Wandering the old streets of Munich, strolling along the Izar river and near by parks! Visiting the Rathaus at the Marienplatz square. Each quarter of the city has it's own Rathaus or CityHall, but this is the oldest and most famous

Marienplatz

by bugulma

The central square of the city is Marienplatz. It is the geographical center of the city as well as historical center of the city because already in the middle of XII century and since those times it was the general place for trading and the market place. The last market closed here in 1853 (grain market).

Free Museums on Sunday

by claudia1975

All state owned museums in Munich can be entered free on Sunday! This includes the “alte Pinakothek” and the “neue Pinakothek”, the “Pinakothek of modern art”. You can save a lot of entrance fees. If you are an art love you might take a whole Sunday for each, if you just want to get a first impression to come back later and see certain exhibitions in details then you can scroll two (or even three) in one day. I like the “alte Pinakothek” (get the audio guide! – each painting there has its own interesting story) and also the “Pinakothek of modern art”, which has a small but great section on architecture of famous buildings and construction principles. All the “Pinakotheken” have caffees and museum stores. Further “Sunday-free” museums include the "Bavarian national Museum", the "Munich City Museum", the "Glypothek" and others. Not included in the free offer are privately owned museums like the “Lehnbachhaus” .

For the “Pinakotheken” exit the U2 or bus 53 at Königsplatz. Then follow the signs. By car you might find parking in the area around, but this might take some time. For detailed driving directions see www.stadtplan.de.

Home of Bayern Munchen FC

by Jagermeister

The Olympia Zentrum is home to Munich's famous Bayern Munich soccer/football team. The stadium is maybe a five minute walk from the Olympia Zentrum station on the Munich subway line.

It is a beautiful complex to look at. Unfortunately for me, I was unable to catch a game while in Munich.

Maximilianeum

by globetrott

Maximilianeum was built between 1857 and 1874 and was ment to be the architectural highlight of Maximilianstrasse.
Today it is used as the parliament of Bavaria, built on top of a small hill on the right shore of the river Isar.
And there is a also a nice park around the building.
