Christmas in Munich

by Nicki2010

Hi

My husband and I are arriving in Munich the morning of 22nd Dec and will be there till the 26th when we were thinking of going to Salzburg for a night or two. Were were thinking of going to the Christmas markets on 22 and 23rd. Does anyone know if much is open on Christmas day and if anyone has suggestions on things to do or places to eat that could be open. We are on quite a tight budget. Also if you can think of any things that are really nice to do while in Munich? Thanks

There are several markets in Munich, the main one on Marienplatz will be open until the 24th December. In the airport there is another market, called Wintermarket, not Christmas market, which stays open until 2nd January 2011.You can go ice-skating there.

Christmas is still very much a family affair in Germany and the Christmas days will be quiet. If you want to visit museums, check each one for its opening times during Christmas. If you plan to go out for dinner on the 25th, book early or look for Chinese takeaway, or a Turkish döner. Most sit-down restaurant will have special Christmas dinners.

Munich is a good choice for Christmas, for economic reasons, shops and Weihnachtsmaerkte are open in Munich.

You can definitely visit one of the main Germany's attractions close to Munich. It's Neuschweinstein. This is a castle, which most Americans associate as a symbol of Germany, when it comes to Germany. It was built by Emperor Friedrich the Great.

In Salzburg you can go to the castle or visit Mozart's birthhouse. However, I am not sure about the issue that you're non-EU citizen. I don't know if you may travel from Germany to Austria, please consult your local embassy and consular services.

Enjoy your stay,

It's actually the 24th afternoon and evening where nearly everything will shut down. On the 25th you have to check with the single sights to see what is open. 26th is like a normal Sunday, apart from the shops everything will be open.

Hi

Thanks the Neuschweinstein looks really beautiful. Do you know how far from Munich it is? As a non EU citizen we get a Schengen visa so can go from Germany to Austria or other Schengen countries quite easily.

Christine, the winter market at the airport also looks like a good idea as we maybe at Munich airport for a bit on the 1st before we leave to come back.

Neuschweinstein - LOL... It was named after a swan, not a swine. So look for NeuSCHWANstein.

Travel Tips for Munich

Lion as a symbol of Bavaria

by meteorologist1

The lion is a symbol of Bavaria and Munich. You will see them everywhere you go in Munich. Even beer brands have them on there. The statues and sculptures of lions are magnificent and attractive. Here is a close-up of a lion outside the Residenz.

St Anna and Cloister

by bugulma

Not far from Maximilianstrasse there is interesting St Anna church. It was built in honour of birth of Max III Josef in 1727 (finished in 1733) by Joseph Fischr architect. Since 1827 the church is of Franziscane Order.

Germany's soccer capital

by Henkster

Info about FC Bayern M?nchen, Germany's best soccer team on www.fcbayern.de

Then there are 2 others teams, TSV 1860 München and Unterhaching.

No other city in Germany has so many good soccer teams. And only FC Bayern is the one that won over 20 championships.

A walk along the Isar!

by Roeffie

The Isar is the most important river floating through Munich. At hot days many people seek some cool spots on the water. The banks of the river Isar are very popular with the native Munchener.

Clothed, Half naked, naked it doesn't matter in this town everyone sunbathes the way he or she likes.

Here I am walking on the Wehrsteg near Museuminsel and Deutsches Museum!
