Near the Hauptbahnhof
The Hotel Helvetia was featured in Let's Go Germany as the friendliest hotel in Munich. And, as is most often the case, the information from Let's Go was correct. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. While spending two days at the Hotel Helvetia we came across front desk staff members who were originally from Turkey, England, and Washington DC.
The rooms were decent sized and the floors and beds appeared new. The building itself was quite old so the new wood floors and beds seemed somewhat out of place. Some rooms have bathrooms and showers, some don't. Each floor has a bathroom and shower for those in rooms without private facilities.
The hotel is half a block from the main train station. Being that close to such a main transport hub has its ups and downs. The noise wasn't too bad. There were a few sex shops and strip clubs right next door...nothing too "in your face" though.
The pedestrian area of Munich (Marienplatz) is only a 8-10 minute walk from the front door.
There is free internet access at the hotel for all guests. Breakfast is free as well an consists of beverages, cold cuts, cheese and breads.

Decent Hotel
I stayed at the Hotel Helvetia in June 2002 and it was decent to good. Expect to pay about 50 Euros for a double.
Unique Quality: Quite close to the main rail station, the Hauptbahnhof, which I found very convenient.
