Where to stay if going on Tour early from Karstadt Dept. Store

by kerrie22

I have two hotels booked at the moment in Munich and need to cancel one. One near the Marienplatz and one near the Center of Munich close to the Main Station Hauptbahnhof. I am wondering which would be the closer hotel to catch an early morning Tour that departs across from the Karstadt Dept. Store on Bahnhofpl. 7?

The store is across the street from Hauptbahnhof. Marienpltaz is about a half mile from there, 3 stops on the Metro.

Bahnhofplatz (= Railway Square) is right at Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway Station). So clearly the hotel near the railway station is closer to the departure point of your tour. However, I would rather not stay in this area if I did not have to, as it is the centre of cheap nightlife, with stripbars, prostitutes, etc. (The Karstadt Dept. Store BTW reaches from Karlsplatz to Hauptbahnhof, this is one U/S-Bahn stop, just 300 metres or so.

Marienplatz is the real centre of Munich's centre, and the area is very nice. It is close enough to walk to Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. Or you take the U-Bahn or S-Bahn. It is only two stops (not three) from Marienplatz to Hauptbahnhof.

The difference between Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof is like day and night and should not be measured in distance but in lifestyle quality.

I agree with kakapo2, stay in the better tourist spot (the Marienplatz) and get up a few minutes early to walk to the Hauptbahnhof in time for your tour...

Located at the rear entrance of the Hofbrauhaus, you can get super friendly advice, pick up postcards, maps and souvenirs. This is also a great location to schedule a day trip to Neushanstein or rent a bike. The bike tour (Mike's Bike Tours) is a must!

Get down to the Hofbrauhaus. It may be a tourist trap, but it sells good beer serves good food, and the vast majority of the customers seem to be German, so it can't be that bad. I have always thought German Beer was the best in the world. Well Bavarian Beer is some of the best in Germany. Add to that the all singing all dancing atmosphere of the Munich beer halls and you really can't miss

There are no hosts at restaurants. The rule is- seat yourself!! I was wuite surprised by this ritual, but quickly caught on...
If there is an empty table, run quickly before someone else gets it. Or...if you see some empty chairs at an occupied table, feel free to join in!

Allianz Arena

by vichatherly

The Allianz Arena, opened in 2005 and home to both Munich clubs - Bayern Munich and TSV 1860

This is a spectacular stadium which has to be seen to be believed. I went to their old olympic stadium, which was a great, a couple of times and this is their new home since 2005.

A 69,000 all seater stadium which you can't fail not to spot due to it's glowing orange lighting. The fans are closer to the pitch on this new stadium as there is no running track as there was in the old one.

10,400 seats in each of the north and south stands can be converted into standing terrace.

Getting to the ground is nice and painless. Catch the U6 (in the Garching-Hochbrück direction) and get off ot Fröttmaning.

It's then a short walk to the ground.

Find a park (there are tons) and sit back with a magazine or some lunch and relax. Even around the parks, there are beautiful museums. There is beautiful art everywhere. Don't always follow the city guides. I've had my best times getting lost.
