train longer than platform

by delcity

years ago sometimes the train coming to rome from outside italy was longer than the platform at the large station in rome. people could pick up their things and move forward until they came to car that was next to the platform and exit. or exit the door of their car and walk on the rocks the length of maybe several cars until they got to the platform.
does this sometimes occur at munich or any place else in germany or europe that you know of.

Re: train longer than platform

by abalada

The maximum standard length for passenger trains is 400 m.
The bigger train stations will have at least some platforms long enough. Often they have however also a number of shorter platforms (e.g. for regional trains).

I don't think that the train was longer than normal, but that for some reason the longer platforms where all blocked and the train was diverted to one of the shorter platforms.

In principle this could happen also elsewhere. But in Germany I've experienced this only when far distance trains where stopping by exception at a train station where such trains normally won't stop and which doesn't have long platforms at all.

Hmmm. That could be a difficult problem for handicaped people.

I agree with abalada. The chances of this happening in Germany is next to zero - though I do not care to make comment on our fellow European neighbours to the south ....... :)

Generally speaking on a well run railway you will always find you're next to a platform when the moment comes that you have to get off. Major stations will at least have a few platforms capable to accomodate trains of 400m, which is about 16 carriages. That is about the maximum you'll find.
Ofcourse, Italy is a bit different when it comes to Trains...

Travel Tips for Munich

by SOzolinsh

Visit the Haus der Kunst, a museum featuring art that had been outlawed by Hitler's regime during World War II. Located near the Englischer Garten, it's a sight worth checking out. The Mathaeser Bierstadt on Neuhauserstrasse is also a terrific place to gather with friends. Enjoy a stein of Lowenbrau with some schweinehaxe (pig's knuckles), or sing and dance along with Theo's band to such hits as 'Ein Prosit'. Be sure to visit the Olympic Park, in northwest Munich, site of Mark Spitz's record-setting performance in the 1972 Games.

Monuments and fountains

by Henkster

Munich has more monuments than any other city in Germany!

Some of the most ornate and impressive old fountains and monuments can be found in the Altstadt, especially around Odeonsplatz.

Some of the famous monuments include the Mariensäule, Friedensengel, Feldherrenhalle and the Siegestor.

tsv 1860 Munich

by bonio

An alternative to FC Bayern in 1 Bundesliga. Very much the poor relations but on the plus side it's easy to get tickets and those there are real footie fans not glory hunters who support a winning team.
Managed to see a game while visiting for Oktoberfest in 2000, a 3-1 win over Freiburg, and enjoyed very much. I proudly wear my 1860 shirt around my home town....few people have heard of them......

Home away from home

by IceBear7

Visiting a different place, soon enough you start missing important things from home. your fav beer or your park or - as in düsseldorf - you miss your river, our Rhein. Munich really is a perfect place - because they have a monument for Vatter Rhein ("father rhine"), and finding this monument/ fountain really makes you feel better!! ;-)
