Cost of living

by diana_renou

Hi, I am planning a trip to Europe and I have to choose betwen Munich and Vienna (I have 4 days to spend in one of this cities). Does someone know which city is more expensive? Which is easy to visit for a person like me who dont speak english well and dont speak nothing of german or austrian language. Any idea about which is the cost of a sandwich or a coffe, etc. I really apreciate your advice. Many thanks. Diana

In my opinion Vienna is more expensive but all of westerm Europe is expensive compared with Australia where I live. But there are ways of keeping costs down, try not to eat in Restaurants, either buy your food in supermarkets or eat in the cafeterias of department stores, Pubs are also reasonably priced. In Vienna instead of having coffee or eating right in the pedestrian mall, walk a couple of streets away and cafes are immediately cheaper.
Also use public transport to get around instead of day tours.
I would suggest Munich instead of Vienna. Accommodation outside the city centre is also a lot cheaper, Youth Hostels are generally affordable. But be aware that in Bavaria they only take people under 26, at least that was the case some years ago.
English is widely spoken so not speaking German will not be a big problem.

The youth hostels in Bavaria now also accept people older than 26, but if there are more people asking for a room, the younger ones are given preference.

The cost of sadviches/cofee/etc. is very similar in both Munich and Vienna. If you stick to supermarkets/sandwich shops/coffe houses/etc, you won't spend much money in either city. There are plenty of budget options in all large European cities.

Vienna, in my opinion, is a bit more beautiful than Munich. And it has a unique and amazing coffee culture that you definitely should experience.

Travel Tips for Munich

Munich Tip

by Star_Dust

I pretty much grew up here. I used to visit my grandparets every single summer as a child. Every street reminds of one thign or another. Like the time i fell and hurt my knee, or the time i asked my grandma why the bird was lying on the grass, not moving.

AUTUMN COLOURS

by Helga67

I visited Munich in late October and I really enjoyed all those beautiful autumn colours. Stroll along the parks, gardens and green zones in Munich, they are plenty. Recommendable is the English Garden and Schloss Nymphenburg Garden.

The Marienplatz where you will...

by Steve-H

The Marienplatz where you will find some superb architecture the tourist information office and roads that lead to the Victualien market, the Hofbrauhaus and shopping on the classy but expensive Maximilianstrasse. Being there for new year meant that we saw the change over from the DM to the EURO, a bit of an imposition as we then had to calculate two conversion rates so we wrote the sterling values on the notes, it felt wierd spending a £12.46 note or a 62pence coin.

Bayern München

by Sjalen

There are two Bundesliga football teams in München, but everyone of course knows Bayern the most. You can go on tours around the stadium and the dressing rooms...if that's not enough, buy a ticket to a game!

Central East shore of Starnberger See

by claudia1975

The best known public swimming area at the lake of Stanberg is the village of Kempfenhausen, just one mile east of the town of Starnberg. However, in summer this area is often crowded with people and the lake floor is muddy. Due to the many people the water is stirred up and appears muddy also. Therefore the central eastern shores of lake Starnberg offer much nicer places to relax, picnic, and swimm. Pepply beaches with clear turquoise water and nice waterfront cafes and fish restaurants can be found everywhere on the central eastern shore of lake Starnberg. Especially around the village of Ambach swimming is good.

You need a bike or car to get there. E.G. you can take the S-Bahn 6 to Starnberg and then take your bike down the path on the eastern side of the lake until you find a nice spot. If you arrive by car park in one of the above mentioned villages. For map details on the eastern shore of lake Starnberg look at www.stadtplan.de and investiagte the area south of Starnberg.
