Dachau

by bmajor98

I was looking to take a tour of Dachau from Munich, but the operators tour is 5 hrs. and I don't have the time before my train leaves. I see that trains leave the main station in Munich frequently and it only takes 20 minutes to get there. Once there, can anybody get in without being on a tour? Is the camp far from the train station? Are tours available once there?
Thanks in advance

There are also tours offered by the memorial site. But with your time constraints it will be better to rent an audio guide.

DB timetable

To: KZ-Gedenkstaette, Dachau

Single ticket is EUR 4,60. Day ticket EUR 6,70 (MVV Munich XXL day ticket).

the trip can certainly be done on your own, although i don't know your time constraints. the train ride is less than half an hour but is not included in the munich zone passes so you have to buy an extra ticket. the bus to the camp leaves from right in front of the train station with clear signage. take the 724 but - it drops you far closer to the entrance than the other one. and only takes about ten minutes to get there.
good sturdy shoes.

Travel Tips for Munich

Theatiner Kirche

by draguza

The church's impressive yellow facade introduces a breath of Italy to Munich. Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, wife of the elector Ferdinand Maria, donated this church to the Italian Order of the Theatines in gratitude for the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne Prince Max Emanuel. It was built in Baroque style and largely completed by 1688 by the masters Spinelli and Zucalli and received finishing touches in Rococo style by the Cuvilliés, father and son, in 1768. The donator did not live to see the church finished. The church's interior is unusual for Bavarian Churches. It is monumental and full of southern pathos , dominated by the white stucco works of the Italian stucco masters Moretti, Brenni and Perti. The church's high altar, whose gable figures represent dignitaries of the House of Savoy gives further evidence of the Italian influence.

Schloss Nymphenburg

by Henkster

The Nymphenburg Palace is one of Europe's biggest royal palaces. Surrounded by a huge baroque garden and landscaped park, with flowers, fountains, lakes and other small palaces.

This masterpiece of Baroque architecture was built in the 17th century and was home to many of the Bavarian royals.

If you are worried about the language you have to speak there, if you know English you will not have problems. Almost know English. But you need to pay attention when you have to remember any street or subway name because some times is difficult because the size of the words.

Top of spectator sport!

by aliante1981

For myself, that's soccer . And regardless of what you think of Bayern Munich it is still one of the top teams in Europe.

So, if you love the sport, there's no excuse whatsoever for not making a visit to the Olimpiastadion.

And remember, they will be hosting World Cup there in 2006.

Archways

by TinKan

There are many decoritave archways around the town. Each one tells a little story about the area that you are about to walk into. Try to guess what the locals made in each area. You will find bakers, butchers and carvers.
