Day trip to the Alps from Munich

by babybabygemma

Hi to everyone

I am going to Munich for three days in August and want to spend a day in the Alps, but am not sure if this is a possibility in one day (ie, I need to get back to Munich that night), so I suppose a max of 1-2 hours each way by train would be the maximum travel time.

Is this a possibility, and can anyone recommend a suitable place within the Alps to visit?

Thank you, Gemma

Good advice by Tyrker. You can by a Bayernticket (9:00 a.m to well past midnight, only regional trains and mass transit) to save some Euros. Herzogstand would probably require a car, though.

If you choose to take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, take the og rail up to Mount Zugspitze. It will cost you an arm and a leg (if you have a Bayernticket, you'll get a small discount), but it is well worth it, especially on sunny days.

Alternatively you could take the train to Salzburg, Austria (Bayernticket is valid!) or even Innsbruck.

Another option would be to take the BOB to Bad Tölz and do the walk to Pestkapelle (see tip). While it's a nice walk, you would only see the Alps in a distance.

I have been to Garmisch and agree it is beautiful especially the trip up the Zugspitz, Germany,s highest mountain. The train from Munich to Garmisch would take about 45 mins and the trains up the Zugspitz leave, I think, 1 hourly. To catch the Zugspitz train - it has it,s own station behind the main Garmisch station. This would be doable in a day. If you don,t want to do the Zugspitz train Garmisch is still very pretty, real chocolate box scenery. The Bavaria ticket is valid all day and only costs E20 for a single. Not valid on the fast Intercity or eurocity trains or before 9a.m. This is great value as you can see a lot in a day and E20 is very cheap.

Travel Tips for Munich

A friendly smile

by TinKan

We found some of the cleanest parks any place we have been in this enchanted city. Each evening folks would come out from the woodwork to stroll around or jog in the parks. It was very nice to spend some time there and the flowers smelled awesome. . As you walked by people you would always hear... "guten Abend" which means good evening and you would see a friendly smile

As if drawn by an artist’s hand, the Füssen’s medieval town center rises high above the banks of the River Lech. Different historical epochs meet here in a harmonious ensemble, whose unique flair is an invitation to go on journeys of discovery into the past or to take a look around the shops. The Hohes Schloss, the former summer residence of the prince bishops of Augsburg and one of Swabia’s largest and best preserved late gothic castle complexes, is Füssen’s landmark, towering over a maze of narrow lanes. The living quarters once occupied by the bishops today house a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Collections of Paintings, which focuses on late gothic and Renaissance works of art from the Allgäu-Swabian and Franconian region.

Don't miss the 'Glockenspiel'...

by Prosperity

Don't miss the 'Glockenspiel' on Munich's 'Marienplatz'. Everyday at 11 a.m. including 'Schäfflertanz'.
Inside that building you will find the tourist information (http://www.munich-tourist.de/) or just ask one of our new rikschamen and -women to take you around. Biergarten, Viktualienmarkt, Kocherlball, Isarfloßfahrt, Maibaumwache, Feldkirchner Blaskapelle.

Beer gardens

by bonio

All over the city there are outdoor beergardens, if the sun's out what better way to spend some time. This one is in the centre on Viktuailenmarkt.....magic! Be careful though...a falling horse chestnut landed in my beer...good job it was almost empty!

Müllersche Volksbad

by Helena1962

Almost in front of Deutsches Museum there is a juwel to be discovered by turist.
Whoever has been in Budapest will remember the wonderful public baths in there: Such one is Müllersche Volksbad.
The history sais there was a man from Munich who became very rich while in USA, at the beginning of the 20. Century. As he died his hometown Munich inherited his fortune. And so they remodelled his house to a wonderfull bath, full of marmor and very beautiful fountains, all in style of modernism(jugendstil. Some years ago the city closed it and make it free for public, for just as much as 3,20 EUR
