Cellphone/mobile phone sim cards

by Nicki2010

Hi,

We were wanting to buy a sim card for our cellphones, what cellphone providers are there? How much do they cost normally and is there a min amount of airtime I need to buy? Will this sim card also work in Austria and France? It seems expensive to put our cellphones on international roaming and we have bought sim cards in the UK previously not to sure if its easy to buy in Germany and which provider to go with?

Thanks

Re: Cellphone/mobile phone sim cards

There is a number of mobile phone prepaid cards in Germany. As far as I know, congstar (a spin-off of German Telecom) and simyo seem to be most popular. But I have also seen a number of new providers whose cards can be bought at the news stand or even in the supermarkets. Most of them offer some kind of discounts or special offers.

If you speak some German, this link would be useful as well:

Hi,
Another option is to have your cell phone unlocked. That way you can buy a sim for each country and only pay the local charges. Its worth checking into. Don't know if it would be cheaper than a prepaid.

Travel Tips for Munich

Beer guide extraordinaire

by acemj

Richie (VTer richiecdisc) was one of the reasons I decided to come to Munich. He's been one of my favorite VT members for a long time and he's well-known here on VT for his excellent beer stories. I figured it was about time I should get to experience one of these stories firsthand. Well, to my surprise and delight, Richie was extremely generous with his time and was able to spend a lot of time showing me around the various beer halls and beer gardens of Munich.

Thanks to both Richie and Doreen (DoreenDe) for the warm hospitality. I enjoyed getting to know you both very much.

Castle of Swans

by chicabonita

... before I went to Munich I looked at several Munich pages on VT. Mostly there were pictures with swans on it. So for me now swans are synonymous to Schloss Nymphenburg.

And guess what my first picture at the Schloss was? Of course a swan!

Munich trade fair - the most modern in Europe!

by Henkster

The New Munich Trade Fair Center was opened in 1993 and is the most modern one in Europe - and also among the biggest. Famous trade fairs include the ISPO (sports fair) and the SYSTEMS (IT fair) - as well as many others.

The functional facilities, service and atmosphere at the New Munich Trade Fair Center set standards worldwide. The 1.7 million sq. ft. of exhibition areas in halls and 3+ million sq. ft. on open-air sites are all top quality and clearly arranged.

So Munich is proud to own both the most modern airport and tradefair center in Europe.

500 years Münchner Reinheitsgebot

by globetrott

Since more than 500 years the so-called "Münchner Reinheitsgebot" makes sure, that for the brewing of beer in Bavaria only Barley, Malt, Hops and water (Gerste, Hopfen, Malz und Wasser) would be used.

There were several attempts - also by the EU - to set an end to these regulations, but they did not have any chance in Bavaria !

On my picture, the young lady with the beerglass is the so-called "Münchner Kindl" (Munich child) - you will see a young lady in that dress riding on a horse during the parade of "Einzug der Wiesenwirte" on 1st saturday of Oktoberfest !
It always looks a bit funny, as the nice young lady is riding one of the heavy horses with strong feet that is normally used to pull the heavy beer-wagons...

Kloster Ettal

by travelfrosch

About a 2 hour drive south of Munich, in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, is the village of Ettal. The primary attraction is the monastery. While this monastery also brews beer and its famous liquorice-flavored "Kloster Liqueur," the reason to come here is the magnificent church. Even if you aren't religious, a special treat is to attend the "Vesper," a special religious service in which the monks chant in unison. Vesper is held daily at 18:00; services are held in Latin on special occasions. Take a look at the schedule of religious services (German only) for details.
