Cheap hotels and flights recommendations needed

by oakleys

Hi there,

I will be visiting Munich, Germany for 4 days from Oct 2nd to Oct 5th and i have a couple questions for fellow locals in Munich and experienced Munich VT travellers.

1) Would you know of any cheap hotels with a private bathroom in the downtown area of Munich?

2) can you recommend a cheap airline or a site where i can get descent flights from Munich to Zurich?

Thanks everyone..

I'm afraid this will be very hard. You're in Munich at the time of the Oktoberfest and all cheap accommodation will have been booked a long time ago. Your best bet is the tourist information in Munich, they may be able to help you.
I don't know of any cheap airline flying from Munich to Zürich. You can check www.whichbudget.com. If they don't show any airlines, there are links on this page to some other pages offering cheap flights.
Good luck!

Can you change your itinerary so that you are in Zürich first and then in Munich? Once the Oktoberfest is over, it's much easier to get cheap accommodation in Munich. Or are you coming for the Oktoberfest?

You may also consider to travel by train from Munich to Zürich.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Munich
To: Zuerich

There is e.g. a direct EC train Munich dep 12:34 Zürich arr 16:44 where you can get on the 5. October 2009 still a cheap special for EUR 39,00 for.
City center to city center with 4 hours not slower than to fly. You need alone 1 hour to get to/from the airports from/to the city centers (combined).

I think i might change my dates then because it's going to be very packed on the weekend im coming since it's oktoberfest. From everyone who's been to this event, is it really worth going to see or is it just a beerfest for ppl to get drunk on the streets?

If you're not coming for the Oktoberfest, then do change your dates, it will make your stay in Munich much easier. I've taken people to the Oktoberfest, but only in the afternoon. It's a large fair with many rides and of course the beer tents. In the afternoon it's a family affair. I like to sit outside in a beergarden, not in the tents. In the evening more and more people are getting drunk, that's when we left.
Please note, this is my personal opinion, I'm sure there are many people who say it's great sitting in a tent drinking beer.

Oktoberfest is gigantic beer/food/music fest. Kinda like a big state fair. I went by myself last year, interesting from a sort of sociological/cultural/people watching type perspective.

I enjoyed of the center and surrounding area much better.

There are some rooms available in Munich Oct. 2 -3, I was checking to answer another question, but pretty expensive. over 200 USD cheapest.

It's better to give a price change than just asking about "cheap" hotels -- what's cheap to you may be more or less what other people consider cheap.

thanks Dino335 for looking into it. But i figure I might just visit Munich on the following weekend just to avoid the big crowds and make it easier to book a hotel too.

Travel Tips for Munich

Two main things to see in...

by barcodex

Two main things to see in Munich are, of course, Marienplatz and Frauenkirche. On most postcards you find either Dom or Townhalls ('old' and 'new'), the only exception I can admit is Octoberfest, but it is a season thing, and mostly a cultural event, not the city sightseeing. This is a photo of Marienplatz. Marienplatz is a magneto - all tourist roads lead to this square.

Munich Tip

Dachau concentration camp. So desolate, so sad. When I was there a load of schoolkids ran around the place chasing each other, screaming and laughing. The guy I was there with thought they were being very disrespectful and was going to say something to their teacher. I asked him not to, for me the place needed the sound of laughter like no other I'd ever seen.

1st saturday - Einzug der Wies'nwirte

by globetrott

Traditionally the Oktoberfest will start with a small parade of horse-drawn carriages leaving from Sonnenstrasse (close to Karlsplatz/Stachus), parading through Schwantaler Strasse to Theresienwiese.
In this parade you will see the Lordmayor of Munich and all the "inn-keepers" of the beer-tents on Oktoberfest, sitting on top of horse-drawn beer-carriages.

This parade is especially nice and interesting for people who are interested in horsecarriages, drawn by 6 or sometimes even 8 horses, just like in the old times, when all of the beer had to be transported that way and only the strongest horses were able to do it !

Lots of people will gather a long time before 11.00a.m. on the 1st saturday in order to get a good place to watch the parade, even though the total distance of the parade is not much more than maybe 800 meters.

When the last carriage had passed by, the audience will also follow the carriages and walk to Theresienwiese that way.

Mike's Bike Tours

by alysania

Mike's Bike tours is a really fun way to see the big sites in Munich while being active. Every tour has a tour guide and the groups range in size but are usually about 15 or so. The tour guides are all very friendly and outgoing and add some great humor into the tours. The tour isn't too long or too short, and even an inexperienced biker could take the tour without a problem. There is only one major up-hill and the rest is pretty flat. The tour guides are what really make this tour special. They provide you with a bike. Just bring a camera and backpack with water if you need it!

Deutsches Museum : Me-109

by cadiana88

The Me-109 was the best known and most produced German fighter of World War II. It was the backbone of the German fighter command and ruled the skies over Europe from 1939 to 1941, as Hitler spread his empire over the continent. The Me-109s earned the respect of Germany's enemies in every theater of conflict and were greatly feared by Allied bomber crews during the later half of the war. Designed by Willie Messerschmitt in 1934, the Bf 109 was first flown in September 1935. This prototype was powered by a Rolls-Royce Kestrel in-line engine because the engine that the Bf 109 was designed for, the Junkers Jumo 210, was not yet available. In July 1938, the firm that initiated the design (Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG), was redesignated Messerschmitt AG, so later Messerschmitt designs often carried the prefix "Me" instead of "Bf."
