Historical Interest -- What is...?
by volarevolare
Hi all,
Was wondering if Nurnberg is a good place to stop enroute from Munich to Berlin?
Again, it's a trip with a historical focus, so let me know if it's worth my while to stop by here.
By the way, does it take about 3 hours on coach from Munich to Nurnberg and another 3 hours to Leipzig and then about 1.5 hours from Leipzig to Berlin?
Thanks for your input and have a great day! :)

francesca

Nuremberg is a great city with a lot more to see and do than just a stop in between. But if you don't have more time I hope you can fit it in.

By train, Munich to Nuremberg is about 1 1/4 hours (ICE). By coach 3 h should work. I assume you have rented/chartered a bus?

Nuremberg was one of the great cities of the medieval age, where it reached almost mythical status. This mythical status is the reason it became such a focal point for the Nazis, and why you'll find lots of medieval history there, but also more poignant recent history.
For example, you can see the Zeppelin Stadium where Hitler gave his famous speeches for the infamous Nuremberg Rallies. When you see it you'll probably recognise it from all the war footage you've ever seen. It was even mocked up in the movie Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
You can also visit the courtroom where the Nuremberg trials were held, and sit in the same seats as the people who gave the Nazis their final justice on this planet. That is quite something.

As antistar mentioned before, there's a lot of history you can discover here, not only 'younger', but also 'old' history. There is the castle, the city's most famous landmark and many other ancient buildings you can see. Please feel free to check out my pages about Nürnberg (I am currently working on them, uploading and filling a lot of tips and pictures) and as me for further questions.
Suerte!

Travel Tips for Nürnberg
Four weeks before Christmas,...
by smoox
Four weeks before Christmas, Hauptmarkt becomes the site of every child´s and every tourist´s dream: The Christmas market (Christkindlesmarkt). Arts and crafts connected with Christmas, toys and goodies are for sale. There´s Christmas music, too, and the air is full of delicious smells.
Site of the Synagogue "Adas Jisroel"
by Nemorino
This monument on the Essenweinstraße in Nürnberg, in front of the Hotel Fackelmann, says that across the street (more or less where the gas station is now) was the site of the Synagogue Adas Jisroel, which was built in 1903 and destroyed by the Nazis during their pogrom night of November 9-10, 1938.
Modern Greek Food
by chris.hh about Eleon
A little bit away from the city centre is a small Greek restaurant in a cute modern style. Very small, and very good food. We had the Meze plate. Very tasty and a nice atmosphere. You should make a reservation because it is really small. In summer they have a beer garden. Not that pretty because of a big street, but OK.

The castle
by andrea.d
Emperor Heinrich III built the first fortress in approximately 1050 in order to secure crown lands. Later emperors extended the fortress.
If you have time you shouldn't miss the guided tour on the interior of the Kaiseburg (Emperor's castle).
Doku-Zentrum
by Nemorino
There are several worthwhile museums in Nürnberg, but the outstanding one in my opinion is the Documentation Centre (Doku-Zentrum) on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
This is an area on the outskirts of Nürnberg where the Nazi (National Socialist) party held huge propaganda rallies in 1927 and 1929, before they seized power, and also in the years 1933-38 when they were the sole ruling party of the country. Another rally with the cynical title "Party Rally of Peace" was scheduled for September 1939, but was cancelled at very short notice, presumably because the Nazis themselves started the Second World War by invading Poland on September 1st.
The Documentation Centre is located in the North Wing of a huge never-finished Nazi building called the Congress Hall, which was intended to hold 50,000 people.
Inside this old unfinished building, the present-day architect Günther Domenig has negated the old Nazi architecture by creating an impressive exhibition area made of steel and glass. According to the Visitors Guide, the original building "is pierced diagonally by a 130-meter glass walkway, a shaft thrust through its heart, permanently disabling this demonstration of power on the part of the National Socialists."
The permanent exhibition at the Documentation Centre is called "Fascination and Terror". It shows how the Nazi propaganda machine managed to fascinate at least some of the German people some of the time, and also shows the terror that was at the heart of the Nazi system right from the beginning.

Q: dilemma "Hy everyone! i'm in Saarbrücken and i want to go in Nürnberg...but i think that 80 euro for train is too expensive..can anybody..."
A: "One solution is to use only regional trains. Slower, but cheaper.
