Christkindlesmarkt is the traditional christmas-market of Nuernberg and one of the móst famous of its kind in Europe.
Even the name of it is special,as normally the expression is Christkindlmarkt, while the ones in Nuernberg and Augsburg are the only ones, that are called Christkindlesmarkt.
In all of the pedestrianzone you will find food- and souvenir-stands, christmasdecorations and x-mas-songs.
This time of the year is also one of the high seasons of the city with the most expensive prices for hotels. For the opening-times just click on the link below !
Die Hase
by leics
I liked this modern sculpture very much......although it is a little odd.
It is by the same artist who created the Ehekarussell (Jurgen Goetz)and depicts a hare based on the work of Albrecht Durer. Durer lived from 1471 -1528 and was, in my opinion, a wonderful artist. Especially his watercolours and drawings of animals and flowers.
Durer's house is more or less opposite the sculpture in Platz am Tiergartnertor. You will probably visit the house, but it would be easy to miss this hare. That would be a pity.
Another great Bratwurst Hause!
by Travelchili about Bratwursthäusle
Great, typical German restaurant to try the local specialities. Try Nürnberger sausages, pretzels, potato salad and whatever else you have room for. And have some good German beer, too. But of course that I probably didn't even need to mention :)
Der "Schöne Brunnen" ("Beautiful Fountain")
by flyingscot4
One of the few artifacts not destroyed by the allied bombing in WWII, "der Schöne Brunnen" is located in Nürnberg's Hauptmarkt near Sebalduskirche (St. Sebaldus Church) and across the square from "Die Frauenkirche" ("Church of Our Lady"). Rising to a height of 19 meters, it was originally built as part of the city well in the late 12th century. It resembles a large pyramid with 40 painted figures which represent royalty, philosophers, artists, bishops, heroes, and prophets. The wrought iron works surrounding the fountain were added in the late 16th century.
There are legends surrounding the well and the iron work (also see other Tips). One of the first involved a blacksmith and his daughter's love for the blacksmith's apprentice. Needing his apprentice but also wanting to ensure that his daughter marry a rich man, the blacksmith agreed to allow the apprentice and his daughter to marry if the apprentice completed a seemingly impossible task. The apprentice had to design and make an iron lattice with a ring with no seam embedded in the lattice. The apprentice accomplished the task which became the black ring in the iron work. The brass ring was added in the early 20th century. Another legend says that a bride turns the ring once for each child she would like to have.
Between 1835 and 1839 the fountain was rebuilt using limestone instead of the original sandstone. The original sandstone figures have been relocated in the National Museum in Berlin as well as in the Germanic National Museum in Nürnberg.
