We came to stay at the Parkhotel Sonnenhof since we were in town to see the world famous Passion Play in August 2010. The building itself is just a few stories tall and looks very "Alpine" with flower boxes overflowing with red and white flowers on all the levels of the building. The lobby area was clean, although a bit dated. However, our room, albeit on the small side, was clean, comfortable, and looked like it had been remodeled within the past year or two. We had two twin beds in our room, fairly close together but not actually pushed together as in our other hotels during the trip. Besides the beds, we also had a desk with a TV, and a fairly large cabinet by the door. The bathroom was small but it was also updated and it was very clean. The only channel in English that we had on the TV was CNN International. Most of the channels were in German but I believe they did also have a channel or two in French and/or Italian. If I remember correctly, there is Wi-fi in the room but there is a charge. We were so busy during our stay that I was not actually able to use my computer before we left. They do have a free Internet computer in the lobby for use by guests if you need to use it.
The hotel actually overlooks a mountain stream which runs through the town, and we were able to enjoy the view from the little balcony that was part of our room.
Our meals were also included during our stay - I believe it was part of a Passion Play package. They provided dinner the night we arrived, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the day that we watched the Passion Play. They also provided us with a sack "lunch" for breakfast since we left the hotel at 4:45 AM the next day to make the hour and a half drive to Munich to catch our flight home.
The dining room/restaurant consists of large tables seating 6 and we had set meal times for our group. For the lunch and dinners, they have a set three course menu with three different entree courses for you to choose from. All the meals were very hearty, with soup and/or salad as a starter, entrees like schnitzel, veal Zurich style, salmon, etc. and a dessert. For breakfast they have a buffet. Everyone enjoyed all the food that they had, and you can keep the menu as a souvenir of your stay.
All the staff that we encountered were very nice. The restaurant was also able to make a cake for our group since someone had a birthday.
Unique Quality: The Parkhotel Sonnenhof is about a 10 minute walk from the main "business" area of Oberammergau where they have shops, banks, and the Passion Play theater. The hotel is next to a mountain stream that runs through the town. The water was a bit turbulent when we arrived since it had been raining, but the water calmed considerably overnight and the water was very clear and you could see to the bottom. There is a pedestrian/vehicle bridge right next to the hotel to get to the main street through town.
If you are looking for souvenirs, especially for the Passion Play, there is also a large gift shop in the lobby. The prices for the Passion Play items are standardized throughout the town, so you can buy your items here if you don't make it into town.
