A magic time at the Fossil Museum
by aaaarrgh
Each year at Christmas time the Fossil Museum at Kleinochsenfurt hosts a Magic Show. The tickets sell out weeks in advance! Top local magicians, artists, ventriloquists, fire-eaters and acrobats entertain tables of adults and children for hours, surrounded by rocks, amonites, and replica pterodactyls. The small bar served Ochsener beer and home-made fossil-shaped cheese biscuits.
Obviously, the whole show was all in German, so many of the jokes were lost on me!! But the international language of slap-stick can be understood by even the most stupid foreigner. Robbie Robbix, an Australian acrobat, wowed the ladies with his tight trousers, theatrical smile and contortions to avoid hitting his head on the low ceiling.
And the night was proof (if any were needed) that Germans have a good sense of humour ;-)

A trip to Marktbreit
by aaaarrgh
A few kilometres along the main road (or railway) east of Ochsenfurt is Marktbreit. This extremely pretty town has a museum, 'castle', town walls and a pretty church (you can climb the tower here). Next to the river is an old crane, very similar to the Alter Kranen in Wurzburg. The town also boasts the second oldest hotel in Bavaria (they don't tell you the location of the oldest!). And the town is the birthplace of Alois Alzheimer (in 1864), who gave his name to Alzheimer's Disease. And my neice goes to school here ;-)
Tourist Information Office close to the main road and main town gate, on Mainstrasse. Closed Mondays.
A city on the Main River

"Vacation Region"
Ochsenfurt is located at the southern most point of the Frankische dreieck in a bend in the Main as seen in this map.
To reach Ochsenfurt ...
From the A3 driving from Frankfurt (West) going towards Würzburg (East)
Take the "Randersacker" exit.
From the A7 driving from Rothenburg (South) towards Kassel (North)
Take the "Marktbreit" exit.
Once off the highway, look for the signs for Ochsenfurt.
"Entrance into the city"
A wall used to surround the old Ochsenfurt. This tower was one of the entries into the city and still used by automobiles entering and leaving the city.
"Man Hole Covers"
Rudy and I were suprised and pleased to see still so many "Stadt Ochsenfurt" man hole covers!
Rudy informed me in most towns these man hole covers are coveted as souvenirs and replaced by less fancier covers.
