Take a walk around the city...
by Stefan
Take a walk around the city center and enjoy the architecture and great athmosphere of the town. We have had a great time in the restaurants and bars while having some beers and lots of great discussing with the locals, which have been very friendly. Regensburg is in Bavaria so when you like you can get here a 'Weisswurst' or a original 'Regensburger' which is a special kind of local sausage.
A hidden gem
by leics
My guidebook made no mention of St Jacob's......pure chance that I came across it.
It's very old.......a monastery and church founded by Irish monks in the 1100s.
and it has the most wonderful northern doorway, with complex and detailed sculptures and carvings whose meanings are still not fully understood.
Celtic knotwork on the columns, strange figures doing strange things, the antichrist, a crocodile, a man with a fiddle, odd symbols........all (happily) protected from weather and pollution by a fully-enclosed glass porch.
And inside you can find capitals carved with more strange creatures, fierce men with the classic plaited beards of the Celts, beautiful painted stonework and lovely Medieval carvings all set in a calm, plain and gorgeously arched space.
A hidden gem indeed, and one well worth seeking out.
Schottenkirche St Jakob on Jakobstrasse.
Follow Gesandtenstrasse from the middle of the Altstadt, cross the road and Jakobstrasse is slightly to the left.
More photos in my Regensburg travelogue.
Christmas market at schloss Thurn und Taxis
by bonio
Excelent market held throughout December at the home of one of the wealthiest families in Germany. It's all very nicely done, a large variety of goods, food and drink on sale in beautiful surroundings. Probably the most enjoyable Christmas market we visited.
I would like to revisit when the market is not on and have a chance to explore the castle if possible.
There is a small entrance fee to the market.
St Peter's Cathedral

This place is well documented elsewhere so I won't bore you with the historical details. I'll merely add some testimony to its imposing grandeur. It dominates the old city, but not in the almost oppressive style of some of its northern counterparts. It is almost like a giant reassurance in stone poised above the huddled dwellings below that no further harm will come to them - a reassurance that has been made good since Napoleon was wounded in 1809 at the walls of the city. Since then even the second world war merely brushed this city and did not visit on it the destruction and cataclysm it meted out to many of her neighbours. Maybe that's why the Angel of the Annunciation statue inside is breaking its sides laughing!

A short visit, mostly to see the Christmas 2007 markets and very enjoyable. Also found plenty more to amuse ourselves plus a friendly hotel and a couple of good eating places......please take a look.
Second visit, a very short one, but a visit to the Kneitinger Keller for lunch, excellent, see tip later
"July 2009"
Enjoyed a beer garden lunch at the Kneitinger Keller.
