OB der Tauber - what an expression ??
by globetrott
I very often wondered, where the name "OB der Tauber" comes from and I found out about it, when I had a look into the landscape around Rothenburg from the observation-tower of the townhall:
When you click on my picture you will see that Rothenburg was built on a small hill, and in the valley the tiny river Tauber is flowing - you see a small part of the Tauber on my picture, and a winding path is leading up the hill to the city.
So Rothenburg is OB(erhalb) der Tauber, (high above the river Tauber) My fondest memory of Rothenburg ??
To be honest, it was quite an achievment for me to get out on the small platform, from where I took this picture and I was lucky to have some minutes there on my own.
Finally when climbing down again I was successful as well without slipping down the dangerous steps. More details about the last steps to the observation-tower are under my "Warnings"

Bring plenty of extra bags, particulary if headed there during November or December. Christmas markets abound and you'll want plenty of room for presents. My cousin's husband (sweet guy that he is) bought us Rothenburg bags to carry our packages in. Bring a raincoat and/or umbrella if visiting during the winter season. You'll need it - particularly if you enjoy photography. :-) Yes, a camera is a necessity.
