I am going to Germany next summer (July 07) with a group of 6 people (including me), and I am planning to stay at Rothenburg for 3 nights. When is a good time to book rooms? Should i make reservations by phone call, e-mail, or regular mail?
If you plan to stay in hotels, use a hotel booking service like

They have often better prices than by booking directly with the hotels.
And they have the (far) better cancelling conditions. Often you can cancel till 6pm of the arrival day without any consequences/fees.
I'm planning to stay at hostels, and I got a deal at a hostel. 2 triple room (double room with an extra bed) 49 Euros/room/night. is that good?
During the middle of the day, Rothenburg is swamped with day tourists coming in on tour buses.
I always walked around town in the morning and took a train to somewhere else during the day while in Rothenburg and came back in the early evening when the tour buses had left.
After 4pm, the town is vacent of the tour bus crowds and all that is left is the residents and the tourists staying in the town, leaving the squares and roads much quieter.
The White Tower or WEISSERTURM was part of the original fortifications before the city expanded. This picture was taken on Galgengasse ( Gallows Lane ) looking northeast. The Jewish Dance Hall is located directly behind this tower.

Hmm - almost like a Fiakker in Vienna...
....and certainly the most elegant way to explore the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. These carriages have - in contrary to many other cities - long seats and a capacity of more than 15 passengers per carriage. That way it is a quite affordable pleasure and maybe a good alternative to explore the old town of Rothenburg without the need to walk through it on cobbled stones.
We found that while in Rothenburg there
are a number of activities one could do.
At night there is a walk around the old city
guided by a Nightwatchman (Nachtwaechter)
dressed in a historical costume that gives
historical background on the city.
Rothenburg is also a great city to explore
by yourself as well. Anyone can walk the
length of the wall or climb the highest
guard tower where there is a great view
and a small museum ......
Another interesting activity in Rothenburg is visiting
the Criminal Museum (Kriminalmuseum) in the city.
Here they have ancient artifacts from the middle ages
that were used for punishment and torturing.
This museum also gives some other historical facts
about the city as well. In Rothenburg there are also many
shops that specialize in selling first rate Christmas goods
and many classic German bakeries ......
